"The Path Less Travelled By"- 12/19/19

It must be the blustery, snowy weather that got me thinking about Canadian puzzles this evening.  The CO of today's puzzle has a number of fun puzzles that I've featured here before, including several with a holiday theme. I tried to see if I could sort out another one of those for today, but I didn't make it in time.  I did come across a couple of other good candidates to share with you though, including this:

Hot Off the Press - 12/16/19

I've known for a while that a 2nd edition to Cully Long's "How to Puzzle Cache" book was in the works, and wanted to be sure to let everyone know that it's now available.  If you already have the first version, there is a supplement you can purchase which contains the new content (so you don't have to purchase the whole book all over again).  I didn't have any part in the update but did edit the original version pre-publication and have been recommending it for years, so I'm excited to see what's waiting in the update.  Here's a link to the supplement (which contains a link to the full version of the 2nd edition in the bottom right).

Today's puzzle takes us to Australia.  In honor of the the new edition of the book I was going to re-feature one of the author's popular Central Park "Gates" puzzles, but then I stumbled across:

Winter Mix - 12/5/19

We had an early shot of winter earlier this week ... a layer of ice with about 10 inches of snow on top.  The snow is bad enough but the ice is much worse, as you can't really always even tell where it is, and it takes forever to chip out the car once it's been encased in it.  But at least it does look like Christmas is coming.  Let's head to Colorado (where they know a thing or two about winter weather) for:

Gone to the dogs - 11/22/19

Today I mentioned to my students that a particular page in their workbooks was going to be particularly useful and they'd want to refer back to it.  I suggested highlighting, starring, or even dog-earing the page.  Imagine my surprise when several of them had no idea what I meant by "dog-earing."  I freely admit that a lot of the expressions I use are out-dated (my son very often tells me that "nobody says that"), but I had no idea that this might be one of them.  In looking for a dog-themed puzzle I ended up coming across this one from Pennsylvania.  Take a spin with some:

I'm gearing up for the launch of season 3 of "The Crown" later this month by rewatching some of the earlier episodes.  I've also been watching some of HBO's "Catherine the Great" mini-series.  The main problem I have had with it so far is that it picked up well into her reign and left a lot of information out of the story.  That pushed me to read a full biography about her.  She certainly was an interesting person, and I'm glad to have learned a little more Russian history.  That all got me thinking that it might be fun today to revisit a Russian cache I shared with you back in 2013.  It's an:

Today's California puzzle is one I first shared back in 2012, when I mentioned how much I enjoyed the original Karate Kid movie.  Lately I have been having a blast cathcing up with the YouTube series "Cobra Kai" which picks up the action with much of the original cast 30-some years later.  I find it surprisingly well-written with a lot of humorous moments (including some that poke a little fun at the 1980's).  And it's still all about:

Befuddled Fish - 10/23/19

I was working in the tutoring center yesterday and ended up spending quite a bit of time with a student working on a Physics problem about a fish hanging on a spring scale in an elevator.  I hadn't done this kind of thing in probably 25 years, but I had the right idea from the start.  I ended up reversing the signs on my first try and it took me a while to sort out what I was doing wrong.  But it's so typical ... if there's a way to do something backwards, I will definitely find it.  But the main question I had, honestly, was why someone was sending this fish up and down in an elevator??  Today's Colorado  puzzle which I featured back in 2013 just seemed appropriate for the occasion:

Opus 244 - 10/16/19

We had another beautiful Fall day here in the Finger Lakes.  It really reminds me why this is my favorite season here (as long as I can forget about what's around the corner).  Not enough leaves have fallen to require raking yet, and the colors are just breathtaking in bright sunlight.  I'm in full Fall mode ... fixed my yearly apple crisp over the weekend,  made no-bake pumpkin cheesecake bars the other night, and bought a delicious New York "Apple Pie Moonshine" with which I spiked some hot cider tonight at a potluck.  Yum.  I was even inspired to go out after work and do maintenance for 5 caches (2 fresh logs, 1 complete replacement, 1 found missing and archived, and 1 found in place despite being DNF'd recently).  It was good to get out and get those all taken care of.

UpHill Battle - 10/9/19

Note:  I posted the date incorrectly on this puzzle, so it was meant to come up yesterday.  Today's puzzle finds us in Oregon.  As I'm posting this it's just past midnight on the east coast, and our beloved Minnesota Twins are down 2 runs, and heading in to the 9th inning of what will probably be their last game of the season.  They had a great year, but it seems like whenever they meet those guys in the pinstripes in the playoffs it's an:

Can Machines Think? - 10/4/19

Today's puzzle takes us to North Carolina.  I've been amazed at how well my phone is able to suggest replies to my incoming e-mails.  It's obviously able to read the messages and offer a suitable short reply, like "Great!" or "Thanks!" or some such that I can click on and reply automatically.  When I compose messages, it's constantly looking ahead and offering suggestions for words it thinks I want to type.  But it makes me laugh when I sign my e-mails with my full name.  When I type out Jennifer it offers two suggestions for continuing other than my own last name:  "Lawrence" and "Lopez."  It does make you wonder, though:

New York Teams are Number 1? - 9/25/19

The calendar says the season is officially "Fall" now, but around here it's the time of year when two of our favorite seasons ("Baseball" and "Football") overlap. As I've mentioned before, we follow Minnesota's teams since that's where my husband grew up.  With the Twins in the mix for the playoffs and the Vikings not having blown their chances yet, there are good reasons to be optimistic, and plenty of games to watch.  The last two Sundays we found ourselves watching football and baseball at the same time. The dog keeps having to change jerseys, which he must find very confusing.  So, all in all you'll have to forgive us if we disagree with the CO of today's New York puzzle who claims that:

Well, Fall is officially here.  We had a gorgeous weekend for the last blast of summer, and I made the most of it with some geocaching up in Rochester and a puzzle-themed geocaching event on Saturday. Even though it's not that far, I hadn't been up there on a puzzle run in about 4 years.  It was super to be able to see some friends I hadn't visited with in a long while, and make some finds on caches that have been in the solved pile for way too long.  I even did the finale and one other from the series that starts at this cache, which is memorable to me but hasn't actually been featured here before:

Pile of ... - 8/20/19

I have often bemoaned my lack of a systematic process to my record-keeping in solving puzzles.  Every so often I try to start a notebook where I vow to write everything down and keep printouts of puzzles in a folder, but over the years I've accumulated stack after stack of scribbled on legal pads, composition books, notebooks, and spiral-bound graph paper notebooks (I love those).  Bunches and bunches of puzzles also end up in the recycling, as discarded printouts, scratch paper, and backs of envelopes.  Today's Oregon puzzle, which I featured back in 2014, is one that I held on to, though, and recently came across in my sewing room, which most of the time is kind of a metaphor for:

Back in the beginning - 8/2/19

Today we take another little trip down memory lane, to revisit a cache I featured back in 2014.  It's from a much favorited series that I started featuring back in 2011, well before the CO became known for his "How To Puzzlecache" book. If you haven't tried the series yet, they are all highly recommended.

I know this puzzle was inspired by a puzzle I featured here in March of 2011, not only because childofatom told me, but because the CO of that puzzle (which is actually in Norway) made the find on today's New York City puzzle and discusses the connection in the log, which you can read here.  I'll probably never get to make the find on the original, but making the find on this one was a special treat, knowing I had helped facilitate the connection:

In the Beginning - 8/1/19

Nine years ago today I posted this note on a puzzle:

"As the puzzle solving member of a new geocaching team I've been working on lots of puzzles for caches around the area in hopes of getting to them some day ... don't know if we're up to the 3 star terrain here, but this puzzle was fantastic! The "Aha!" moment of how to get it to work was quite unique. I feel like I've learned something new and very cool. Thanks! Maybe some day we'll be able to find the cache."

A couple of months after that I did make my way to the cache, and a couple of months after that I featured the puzzle as my second post for this blog:

Chain Reaction? Absolutely!

As I've been writing my logs for my recent California trip I'm reminded how much I enjoy looking back over the excellent puzzles I've solved in the past.  They feel like old friends, especially now that I've gotten to visit so many of their locations and meet a lot of their owners.  Even if you've solved this puzzle already, I hope you'll enjoy this little trip down memory lane.  I'll probably be posting some others in the coming days.

If you have your own favorites from your early puzzling days, please consider sending them along to me.  Your contributions are always greatly appreciated.

Space Rangers - 7/29/19

I had a wonderful trip to California last week and found lots and lots of great puzzle caches.  Just as fun, though, was the chance to meet up with some of the creative puzzlers that I have corresponded with over the years.  I've started the process of writing my logs, but it will take me a while to do them all.  Even the DNF's were not all bad, because I as I log them I enjoy thinking about the puzzles again and even making my way to GZ at all was a fun experience.  I put a nice dent in my "solved" list, but there were many more that I didn't get a chance to look for. Here's a recent one that I wasn't able to get to, but it will remain on my list for a potential future visit:

Geo Heartbreak - 7/26/19

Here's what Ol'Fogie has to say for us today:

I recently made my first trip to North America’s left coast, traveling with
yomegranate, JackTN and the non-caching member of the fam affectionately
known as MuggleBoy. We did a few days in Portland and Seattle getting the
Trifecta of HQ, the Ape Cache and the Original Stash. We also ventured into
British Columbia and hung out around Vancouver for a few days. While there, I
hammered out some really nice puzzles. This was one of my favs, even though
it revolves around:

TARDIS - 7/25/19

Here's what Ol'Fogie has for us today:
Time And Relative Dimension In Space (TARDIS)
I stumbled across this South Carolina gem while working on a puzzle from the
Going Caching mega event a couple of years ago. I’m not a follower of the
series, but it didn’t take long to figure out what needed to be done. And you’ll
recognize it immediately if you are a fan of...

Gridlocked - 7/24/19

Another posting from Ol'Fogie today, while I'm off on my cache-cation.  He says:

There are lots of grid-based puzzle types out there. But a fellow cacher brought
this North Carolina diddy to my attention the other day and I had not seen this
type before. Given the method to solve it, the grid could really be any size
depending on what you wanted to tell the solver; this one just happens to be...

Summer Vacation - 7/23/19

I'm on a little geocaching vacation so I'm going to let Ol'Fogie take the wheel again for me for a few days.  Today he brings us to an "alarming" cache from California:

I assume that most of us have a checklist (even just a mental one) of the things
we examine when trying to solve puzzles. Dissect images, look at page source
code, check for oddly used words, Google stuff, etc. And every time I come
across a new way to hide coordinates, I add that to my puzzle-solving...

Man on the Moon - 7/20/19

I have enjoyed following all of the historical coverage of the moon launch and landing this week.  I was only 8 months old at the time so I don't remember Apollo 11, but I do have vauge memories of watching some of the coverage of one of the later trips (probably Apollo 15 or 16).  If you have the time to watch the actual 4.5 hour rebroadcast of  CBS' coverage from the morning of the launch (including commercials and other news of the day), I think you'll find it highly interesting as a record of that time.  Today's puzzle finds us in Paris for a bit of:

Longtime readers may remember my fondness for the puzzles (and hides) of California CO Lamneth. He has a real talent for finding interesting locations and creating caches and puzzles to fit them.  I'm always sure to check the street views of my solutions to see if I can spot the connection.  In hopes of traveling out that way later this summer I recently binge-solved a bunch of his most recent ones, and am happy to be able to share them with you throughout this coming week.  Let's start off with the newest one:

Today's puzzle takes us over to western New York. Our little pooch has a pretty easy and happy existence, especially since he's been getting walked for up to an hour a day since I've been off for the summer.  In between walks you'll often find him sacked out on the couch flat on his back with all four paws in the air, snoring blissfully.  But I don't think that's what they mean when they coined the expression:

Today's puzzle takes us to the UK.  Our weather has not been very summery so far.  Temperatures have been below normal and we've had a ton of rain.  The grass has sure been growing, though, which means it needs regular mowing even though the ground is really too wet for it.  Our backyard is quite squishy.  Fortunately the wind hasn't been that bad, so we haven't had to go around and:

Today's puzzle takes us to Massachusets, which I'm pretty sure is the home base for an online puzzle hunt called Puzzle Potluck 2, which I had a lot of fun working through for a few days this week with a couple of other puzzle cachers.  There's still time to give it a try if you're interested; we found it a lot of fun.  I don't get to do as much group solving as I'd like, and it's amazing how much more progress you can make when you're able to bounce ideas off of others.  I will admit I was feeling pretty rusty when we first started out ... 'Til the Cows Come Home - 6/15/19

I was flipping channels the other night while awaiting the results of the Blue's game (I didn't want to watch lest I jinx them, since I hadn't been watching regularly so far ... I know it doesn't make sense, but that's the way my brain was working) and came across a show on the History channel about competitive butchering.  It's even called "The Butcher," so it shouldn't be hard to find if you wanted to check it out.  My maternal grandfather was a meat inspector and my mom worked in the meat department for a while and once or twice tried to teach me about looking at the cuts of meat to be sure I was getting what I was paying for.  She said if you knew what to look for you could even occasionally find a better piece of meat labeled as a cheaper one.  Those lessons never really took, and I don't think I'd put much thought into everything that's involved in the whole meat packing process.  But it did get me thinking about a California puzzle I'd seen a while back that I could share with you today.  Now you can be:

Today we travel to a series of caches in Belgium.  What are we Game of Thrones fans to do while we wait around for the books to come out, now that the television series is finished?  A G.O.T.-themed geo-art is just the ticket.  I had fun going through these last night, and got through them all except for a couple that I couldn't figure out the Dutch equivalent of the answer.  I thought I knew my G.O.T. pretty well, but I admit that I did have to look up a few.  The real fun got to be seeing whether I could figure out the question without translating from the Dutch. ;)  This one was probably my favorite:

Mission Impossible - 5/13/19

I'm using another one of Ol'Fogie's recommendations for today, since I ended up being delayed a lot on my trip home Sunday.  It felt like a "mission impossible," honestly, but I did finally make it in the end, only about 6 hours late.  I woke up to a cancelled flight and a suggestion by the airline to just wait another day, which wouldn't work since I have exams to give.  I got a ticket on a different airline and then ended up having my Atlanta-bound flight diverted to Knoxville because of a problem with the landing gear (part of it was stuck "down," which is obviously better than stuck "up," but they told us it created extra drag on the plane, burning a lot of fuel so we couldn't make it to Atlanta and it was enough of an issue that they declared it an emergency landing).  I probably would have had enough time while I was waiting around for a replacement plane to go ahead and go and find some of Ol'Fogie's caches. Let's see where he's sending us today:

"Good afternoon, Geocacher.
Your mission, should you decide to accept it, is to solve this Cyprus puzzle in
order to find the correct coordinates. As always, should you or any of your team
be caught, we will disavow any knowledge of your actions. This blog will
