We always said "coke" - 3/30/13

Today's puzzle is another from the "POP" series . This particular one reminded me of when I first met my Midwestern husband and his friends and how they were always talking about "pop" when they wanted a carbonated drink.  We always just said "coke" down south where I grew up (see this link posted in one of the logs for the puzzle.) Have some fun with:

POP #2

Tomorrow we'll visit a puzzle for the Easter holiday in Oregon.

The Impossible Puzzle - 3/29/13

Today's puzzle from Canada's Ontario province is from a series called "CC" standing for "Couch Cache" which, given the kind of weather we had around here, was definitely the type of caching I was doing the most of this winter!   Try your luck with:

The Impossible Puzzle - CC #2

Tomorrow we'll be back in California.

March Madness - 3/28/13

An observant reader pointed out that I hadn't featured any puzzles in honor of the NCAA basketball tournament this year, and suggested today's Indiana cache as a fun one to correct the oversight.  Glad it wasn't too late to work in a little:

March Madness!!!

Tomorrow we'll be in Canada's Ontario province.

Griffin of Absence - 3/25/13

I came across this classic kablooey puzzle recently, and I could see how it was a forerunner to some of his later work that I particularly enjoyed.   Have some fun working through this early one:

The Wanderer - 3/24/13

I recently attended a concert by the great Irish band "The Chieftains." While killing time before it was time to go, I decided to get myself in the Irish spirit by looking at geocaching puzzles in Ireland.  The one I decided to share with you today is:

The Wanderer

Tomorrow we'll be in California.

An Odd Little Practice - 3/22/13

When you look at today's California puzzle, you might think you've seen it featured here before.  If so, then you've been reading this blog for a long time.  In the early days I posted a puzzle that's a close relative of this one, but even if you've done that one you'll find something fun and different in:

An Odd Little Practice

Tomorrow we'll be in central New York.

Slitherlink - 3/21/13

For the past year or so I have enjoyed subscribing to "World of Puzzles" magazine, a bi-monthly spinoff of "Games" magazine.  This month's issue (the cover says "Spring 2013") features a special bonus section of puzzles written by a fellow cacher from north of the border.  These puzzles aren't caching related, but he talks about writing geocaching puzzles, and it turns out that the May, 2011, issue of the magazine actually featured a special bonus section composed of geocaching puzzles he had written just for them. Very cool, indeed!  I'm hoping I can track down that issue so I can try the puzzles for myself.   Today I'm featuring the first of a series he put out:

South London #1 - Slitherlink

Tomorrow we'll be in California.

Tomorrow we'll be in Pennsylvania.

Acrosticache - 3/18/13

Today's California puzzle is of a type I featured a couple of months ago, but this one is unique and fun for a couple of reasons.  One reason is that the CO has invited any interested cachers to use this exact same puzzle for their own hides (you'll see how this is possible when you read the listing) and the other ... well, to discover that one you'll have to solve:

Acrosticache

Tomorrow we'll head over to Utah.

Champagne Wishes - 3/16/13

I think today's California puzzle references the signature phrase of a different celebrity, but my first thought was of a certain band leader who would have turned 110 earlier this week, and whose music continues to entertain on PBS.  I can remember sitting around watching Lawrence Welk with my grandmother and parents, and when my daughter was young she enjoyed watching the costumes and dancing from back in the day.   Here's a toast to you along with:

Champagne Wishes

Tomorrow we'll celebrate St. Patrick's day in North Carolina.

Meridian - 3/12/13

Today's puzzle is another in the Nevada series we visited yesterday, and it taught me something new.  Try your luck with:

Puzzle Me This #16: Meridian

Tomorrow another from this series.

Knowing of my love of puzzles, my dad sent me an article from the March 11, 2013 "Time" magazine, entitled "The Answer Men," which I highly recommend.  It talks about the lure of puzzling and the World Puzzle Championship.   If you can get a copy of that issue, I think you will find it interesting.  My favorite line:  "A well-constructed puzzle leads you down a particular chain of reasoning to a specific elegant or counter-intuitive cognitive leap, and as you make it, you know at that moment that you're making precisely the same leap the puzzle designer did.  There's a moment of silent intellectual communion, of shared aha!"  Well said.

Just Slide Along - 3/10/13

Several of the puzzles in the Nevada series we're visiting this week require you to play a game or complete a task in order to receive the cache coordinates.  It was a good thing for me there was no minimum time required to complete:

Tomorrow, another from this series.

Very Structural - 3/4/13

I'm sure we've all had the experience where we solve a puzzle in a way that the CO didn't intend.  I recently realized that I oversimplified the method in solving a New York City puzzle I had posted here a while back , and which even inspired one of my own puzzle creations. I only realized what I had missed when I came across another presentation of the same idea in Pennsylvania.   I wonder how many other folks actually did the original puzzle following the requirements outlined in:

Very Structural

Tomorrow we'll be in New York City.
