To the Teachers - 9/30/20

Today's recent Maryland puzzle really struck a chord with me, because it was written in honor of a favorite teacher.  My parents were both teachers, and my father was an Education professor in charge of teacher training for many years.  I hope you'll think of your own favorite teachers while perusing this puzzle written:

Take Me Out To The Ballgame

I spent a while this evening poking around looking at Minnesota puzzles, and came across several I want to go back and spend a little more time with before sharing them with you here.  I have to say that this one made me laugh, and I think it's a fun way to celebrate our Minnesota Twins winning the Central Division and getting to keep playing past the regular season.  I'm glad they're providing a few more chances to (virtually):

Wait! What did he just say?!?! - 9/23/20

Today's puzzle takes us to South Carolina.  The NFL football season is now well under way, and even though our team is off to a rotten start, it's good to see them back in action ... some things are the same, but a lot is definitely very different.  I hope you'll have fun with this little puzzle from a simpler, mask-free era:

A Geocacher's Breakfast - 9/22/20

Today's cache takes us to New Jersey.  We've recently been having a lot more breakfasts for dinner at our house.  Last night's repast was bacon and eggs and banana pancakes with real maple syrup and a dollop of whipped cream on top. Yum.  What would you like for:

Strawberry Fields Forever - 9/20/20

Today's cache takes us to Arizona.  I am not much of a drinker, but one of my favorite treats at the beach is a frozen strawberry daiquiri.  There were no beaches for me this summer, but a few weeks ago when the grocery store was selling packages of strawberries on a buy 2 get 3 free sale it occurred to me that we should try making some ourselves.  We pulled out the 30 year old blender and I found a recipe that used the coconut rum  we had on hand (we usually mix it with pineapple juice).  Yum, yum!  After adding a little dollop of whipped cream on top I almost felt like I was on vacation. That's why today I'm appreciating:

Third Time's a Charm - 9/18/20

Today's California puzzle is another that I tested pre-publication.  I liked it because it taught me something interesting that I'd never seen before, and I was able to work through it without being tempted to ask my husband to write a computer program.  Since I was working by hand I made a mistake or two, but the:

Climb those steps! - 9/14/20

I had a good time this summer finally starting to put out a series of puzzles loosely based on a Nancy Drew theme.  I've been perusing all of the titles of the books and figuring out how I could work them into puzzle caches.  So far I'm about half way through and I have ideas for a few more to come.  One of the titles was "The Mystery of the 99 Steps" which presented the perfect opportunity, if I could manage to pull it off.  It took a lot of planning, but I've been pleased with the results.  But the puzzle I'm point you to today (which I haven't shared here before) is the original California one that inspired it.  I still have my old composition-style notebook with all of my work written down for Kablooey's:

Are you ready for some football? - 9/13/20

Today's puzzle takes us to Canada's province of British Columbia. We're just about ready for the launch of our team's football season tomorrow.  The ceremonial Viking horn has been dusted off and given a test blow, and everyone's Viking garb has been located except for the dog's.  He's currently wearing his Twins shirt, so that may have to suffice.  How about you,:

A pair of "plates" - 9/10/20

Two related series of caches in Australia were brought to my attention recently.  The "F" plate series is meant to be training ground for the harder "P" plate series.  I've been meaning to go back and look at more of both series, but this is the one that was specifically recomended to me:

A Harder Puzzle Cache - 9/8/20

I hope everyone had a great Labor Day weekend.  As I have for the last several years, I spent a good portion of it working on puzzles in Mark Halpin's Labor Day Extravaganza with some friends.  It was very challenging, but a ton of fun.  Today's puzzle takes us to Australia, where the CO was visiting.  While there he placed both an easier and:

It's Relative - 9/5/20

Today's puzzle is from New York, but the location falls in a bit of a gray area as to whether you'd call it "upstate" or "downstate."  To me, it's "down," but to those in NYC, it's probably "up."  I guess it's all relative, just like the puzzle itself.  Is it:

The Taste of New Jersey - 9/2/20

It's one of those age old questions ... what's your generic word to refer to any carbonated drink:  pop, soda, or coke?  I grew up well into "coke" territory, but married a "pop" guy, and now live in a "soda" state.  Today's New Jersey puzzle discusses a couple of local beverages and encourages you to:

Going Downhill? - 9/1/20

As I worked on today's California puzzle the other day, it occurred to me what a strange language we have, where a single phrase can have two pretty much completely opposite meanings.  I know in the past I've referred to a situation as "all downhill from here," meaning that we had gotten through the hardest part.  But on the other hand, if things are "headed downhill" then they're definitely not good.  Just think about that the next time someone says:

It's all Downhill from Here!
