Ancestral Caching - 10/18/22
Today's puzzle takes us to Virginia. I've been doing a lot of non-geocaching related puzzling over the last week, so I'm turning to my assistant puzzle-picker Ol'Fogie for today's post. He writes:
When COVID caused the cancellation of caching events, my friend SpeedCity began hosting a Tuesday evening Zoom session in which they started working through US puzzles sorted by favorite points and working down that list with a few others thrown in. She sent me a couple they tackled in a recent meeting, and one of those was…

Mr. October - 9/29/22
The best side benefit of this game is making new friends around the globe. I attend the Going Caching mega event in Rome, GA every year. It is centered around puzzles and the area offers a plethora of amazing mysteries beyond those placed for the event. This year, I have developed a long-distance friendship with fellow solver, SpeedCity, as we have been working together on puzzles in anticipation of the event. Hopefully, we will get to meet in person while there, but regardless we have had a lot of productive give-and-take and it is almost always a good thing to look at stuff from different perspectives. Today's offering is one of those; it eluded me due to a miscalculation on my part, but SpeedCity set me back on the right track when she pointed out my mistake on…

Just Letters - 9/4/22
Today's offering is best summed up by the description itself:
"We use letters every single day and probably never even think of them. I've also done many puzzle caches that letters in various ways. There have been numerous ciphers (Pigpen, Baconian, Vigenere, ROT13, etc. There have also been numerous anagram puzzles and other "word" type puzzles. I've counted letters, rearranged letters, using the letters position in the alphabet, etc. There are so many unique ways to use letters in puzzles that's it impossible to list them all here."
And so, here is another contribution that centers on using…

Cat People? - 8/30/22
Everybody Wants to be a Cat
I am neither a "cat person" nor a "dog person." I like them both but my current family makeup only includes a feline. Jenny is both my finicky, but loving, furkid and bane of my existence. She purrs loudly as I rub her chin and then attacks my arm, using full claws and teeth, a millisecond later with absolutely no provocation on my part. Then, as the blood streams down my hand, she licks my nose and looks at me with remorseful eyes. No, I don't understand her, or any other cat for that matter. Today's puzzle was created in honor of a family whiskered one. Enjoy the art and mystery of…

I've known for a while now that the "follow by e-mail" feature that people had signed up for in the past was going to be disabled, and it appears that has now happened, at least for some folks. This post is the first one that I'm trying to distributed via the new "google group" that I invited people to start joining last year, in anticipation of this change. This will require me to post things in a little different way than I have in the past, so I'll ask for your patience as I figure it out and undoubtedly goof it up every once in a while. If someone more tech savvy than I am has a suggestion of a simpler way to make this work, please feel free to get in touch.

Famous Lefties - 8/13/22
I've been saving this puzzle for today for a long time, since 8/13 is International Left-Handers Day. I think I was a junior in high school when I started noticing the preponderance of left-handers I knew who were good at with math/science, or music, or sometimes both. Being strongly dominantly right-handed myself, I sometimes used to try to exercise the other half of my brain by trying to write left-handed. It never went very well. Have some fun with these:

Scully's Cache - 8/4/22
Today's puzzle takes us to California. I've mentioned before that I've been a baseball fan since the mid-1970's, when I started following the L.A. Dodgers. Although I grew up in Tennessee, I was born outside of L.A., and we had a lot of family there. I've always had a real soft spot for their wonderful announcer Vin Scully, and was saddened to learn of his passing this week. In his honor, take a look at:

Today's puzzle takes us back to Canada's Alberta province. In pursuit of something not too heavy/dark to watch I stumbled across the British detective show "New Tricks" on Hulu. I've enjoyed the characters and the writing, and another plus is that not every other word is ... colorful ... like in many of the streaming shows I've tried lately (I find that my vocabulary deteriorates if I watch too much of that ilk). Stuff on the Sidewalk - 6/15/22
Today's puzzle takes us to Minnesota. Some folks around the corner are getting ready to move, so they've been putting out all kinds of free stuff. Since I'm trying to get rid of clutter myself I've resisted the urge too look through it too closely, although I did schlep home a good-sized kiddie pool for the dog to cool off in this summer. You just never know what you can find in the:

Blue Switch Day - 5/2/22
I mentioned the other day that I was burning the midnight oil trying to finish writing up a puzzle that I had hoped to debut at an event the following morning. Now that it's been solved, found, and published I thought I'd share it with you today. The inspiration for the puzzle is "Blue Switch Day," which is today. After thinking all week about several different possibilities for a blue-themed puzzle, I finally came up with something that seemed workable and at least mildly entertaining Friday evening. After having it tested I still felt a bit "meh" about it, so I ended up trying something different, tweaking it a little more during testing, and ending up with what you'll see here, which I'm pretty happy with. Try your luck with:

Today's puzzle takes us to Tennessee. Most evenings after work my neighbor and I walk our dogs together, but today I ran late and ended up going by myself. Here's what guest puzzle-picker Ol'Fogie has to say for his last offering (for now):
This mystery recently dropped in my neck of the woods and I was immediately
intrigued. Right away, I noticed something that seemed out of place, but I couldn’t
make the connection. Then, I created a brain trust with my friend antbedy and
she discovered the pivotal starting point. Sure enough, that was the key to the
solve and I was kicking myself because…

Spring Break #6 - 4/9/22
I’ve always loved spam. The salty goodness. It was part of regular grocery store
trips with my mom. Nothing to notice. Nothing out of the ordinary. Nothing different
about it. It’s just good, simple comfort food.
I grew up eating spam. Sliced, crisped in the frying pan, with rice and a fried egg.
I love it between toasted Hawaiian buns or in an omelet...just SO GOOD! I’ve even
fixed spam spaghetti (onions, garlic, spam, and a jar of good ole’ Ragu).
