Today's California puzzle was recommended to me earlier today and happens to be perfectly themed for today, as I've been thinking back to when:

It all started...

Friday will mark the 10th anniversary of this blog and although I had seriously considered letting it go at that point, I'm willing to keep it going a bit longer.  You can expect to see a lot more reruns from the early years, but I'll do my best to keep adding in new and as yet undiscovered puzzles as I can find them.  If everyone who reads this would be willing to recommend a puzzle to me every month or so I'm sure I would have more than enough.  I hope you'll consider helping me keep things going.

Double Jigsaw -12/28/20

Today I'm rerunning a Washington post I shared in this date in 2017. I always enjoy doing jigsaw puzzles during the holidays,  and did an old favorite one with my daughter on Christmas night. We even got my husband involved towards the end.  I have lots of others I might still dig out, so this could be a holiday marked by a:

Humble Holiday - 12/22/20

I didn't realize it, but apparently in addition to being the winter solstice yesterday was National Crossword Puzzle Day.  For the last 200+ days my son and I have worked on the New York Times crossword puzzle either together or in tandem.  We make a good team and it's been a fun diversion.  Today's puzzle takes us to California for:

Harmony's Humble Holidays - December 21st

I'd also like to recommend this intriguing non-geocaching puzzle crossword that I worked on as part of a recent puzzlehunt.  It's a diagramless crossword, meaning that you have to figure out the dimensions of the grid and construct it yourself as you work out the clues. (I'll have to see if I can find a geocaching puzzle with one of those).  I've only done a couple of them, so it was fun getting this one to work out. Even when you think the puzzle is finished, there's more to do, and I found it quite entertaining.

Word Wheel - 12/18/20

Today's brand new California puzzle was inspired by the work of Eric Berlin, whose puzzles I've enjoyed myself.  His New York Times crossword puzzle from11/29/20 was one of the better ones in recent memory, in my opinion.  I purchased his "Puzzlesnacks" book but ended up giving it to my mother-in-law as a present when she found herself without any puzzles to do earlier during the pandemic.  Take a spin at the:

P.S. For anyone who's interested, we did wake up to just under 12 inches of snow yesterday. The sad part is that I'm not sure any of it will actually stick around another week so we can have a white Christmas.  A foot of snow is nothing to sneeze at, but we're sure happy we're not digging out like the folks about an hour south of us who got about 40 inches(!)

Zodiac message solved! - 12/12/20

Today I'm sharing a tough California puzzle I first featured back in 2014.  I was fascinated to learn yesterday that a long-undecoded message left by the Zodiac killer has finally been cracked.  Here is a video made by one of the codebreakers that gives an easy to follow explanation for how it was done.  I think any of us who enjoy solving puzzles can relate to the processes that are described, and be really impressed at the results they were able to achieve!  It's only a shame that the decryption doesn't lead them any closer to the identity of:

Julcachelender - 12/10/20

Over the years I have enjoy seeing different versions of puzzle caches that built around advent.  The ones I am recalling have been in Sweden, although I wouldn't be surprised to learn that they are found in other places as well.  One form is a single cache that requires you to solve multiple pre-existing puzzle caches (not always holiday-related), with specifics being revealed one at a time when the cache page updates each day.   Another version is a series of caches where a new one comes out each day.  I've found both kinds to be a good source of fun.  Here's one that celebrates another Swedish tradition:

Happy Cachedays - 12/1/20

I am excited to have spent some time caching this weekend. I did a newish Adventure Lab with a friend (distanced, of course) and logged the bonus cache as my first "unknown" cache since March 1st.  Who could have imagined back then what the next 9 months would bring? I can't believe it's December 1st already.  It was always a special day to me when I was little, since it marked the first day we started getting ready for Christmas.  My mother would get out the advent calendars for us to start opening and haul the "portable" record player upstairs and set a stack of  Holiday LP's for us to play as my sister and I went to sleep.  Mitch Miller and the gang always came up first.   For the last 22 years we've had another reason to celebrate today since it's the birthday of the "A" in teamajk.  Whatever you may be celebrating today, I hope you'll enjoy today's Connecticut puzzle:

Today's puzzle takes us to California. I was saddened today to hear of the passing of Alex Trebek. I have a lot of fun memories of watching "Jeopardy" with my parents and when the local TV station had a contest where you could win a chance to be on the show we all went and took the placement test in hopes of being chosen (Dad was the only one of us to score high enough to get in the running, but he wasn't the one picked to appear on the show).  It sounds like they still have enough taped shows to run for a few more weeks.  I suppose the show will go on somehow, but it's going to be pretty sad to watch Alex's final:

Mmm ... cake - 11/3/20

Today's puzzle takes us to Oklahoma.  My big accomplishment yesterday was baking my favorite chocolate cake (the "Reine de Saba" from Julia Child's "Mastering the Art of French Cooking").  My mother used to make it for her French students when I was a kid and I would routinely request it as a birthday cake.  I only bake one about every 10 years or so, but I figured this was the perfect year to indulge.  I have definitely not mastered the art of French cooking, but it did turn out well in the end despite a couple of minor mishaps along the way.   If you ever go to all the trouble to make one, I'd recommend doing like I do and make a double recipe so you'll have a two-layered cake.  It's so dense and fudgy I'd never try it as a:

Go Dodgers! - 10/29/20

Today's cache takes us to California.  Back in April I wrote a post lamenting the fact that the baseball season had not started, and reminiscing about the team I grew up rooting for, the Los Angeles Dodgers.  I was born in a suburb of L.A. (although I lived there less than a year before my parents moved to Tennessee) and I claimed them as my team when I started watching them at the age of 8.  Once my husband's beloved Minnesota Twins had been eliminated from the playoffs this year I started rooting for the Dodgers again in earnest, and was thrilled that they won the world series the other night.  I can't believe it was 32 years ago when I was in college and rooting for them in:

Fall Colors - 10/10/20

We had a beautiful Fall day today, and the reports are that the leaves are at about 75% of their peak color.  I should really find the time to take a short drive and do a little leaf peeping. In honor of the changing leaves let's head to Minnesota for a pair of puzzles, one that hasn't been shared here before, and its sequel which I posted way back in 2016:

Strawberry Fields Forever - 9/20/20

Today's cache takes us to Arizona.  I am not much of a drinker, but one of my favorite treats at the beach is a frozen strawberry daiquiri.  There were no beaches for me this summer, but a few weeks ago when the grocery store was selling packages of strawberries on a buy 2 get 3 free sale it occurred to me that we should try making some ourselves.  We pulled out the 30 year old blender and I found a recipe that used the coconut rum  we had on hand (we usually mix it with pineapple juice).  Yum, yum!  After adding a little dollop of whipped cream on top I almost felt like I was on vacation. That's why today I'm appreciating:

Climb those steps! - 9/14/20

I had a good time this summer finally starting to put out a series of puzzles loosely based on a Nancy Drew theme.  I've been perusing all of the titles of the books and figuring out how I could work them into puzzle caches.  So far I'm about half way through and I have ideas for a few more to come.  One of the titles was "The Mystery of the 99 Steps" which presented the perfect opportunity, if I could manage to pull it off.  It took a lot of planning, but I've been pleased with the results.  But the puzzle I'm point you to today (which I haven't shared here before) is the original California one that inspired it.  I still have my old composition-style notebook with all of my work written down for Kablooey's:

Going Downhill? - 9/1/20

As I worked on today's California puzzle the other day, it occurred to me what a strange language we have, where a single phrase can have two pretty much completely opposite meanings.  I know in the past I've referred to a situation as "all downhill from here," meaning that we had gotten through the hardest part.  But on the other hand, if things are "headed downhill" then they're definitely not good.  Just think about that the next time someone says:

One of the most memorable puzzles from the MIT mystery hunt last January involved figuring out movies solely based on emojis.  I even got the t-shirt which features that puzzle (I'm sure a little creative googling will find you the answer, if you're curious how it worked):

This Day in Baseball History - 7/17/20

Today's puzzle takes us to Minnesota.  Our household has really missed watching televised sports this season, and we are especially looking forward to the return of baseball and being able to root for our beloved Twins.  Here's hoping that everything with the planned restart goes well.  In the meantime we've had the opportunity to relive some moments in past baseball history, including this one:

ꓵbƧIDE ⮍ DOMИ - 7/11/20

I love the photos in today's puzzle from Kansas.  They remind me of the only canoe trip my husband and I ever took way back in the early 90's.  We took our little dog and he sat on top of the cooler in the middle of the canoe looking like Cleopatra going down the Nile.  We weren't very adept paddlers and at least once we did tip over ... but since all of our stuff was packaged such that it would float, our friends were able to chase it down while we recovered from turning:

10 Years! - 6/30/20

Today marks 10 years since I started caching.  If you'd told me then all the places it would take me and the great people I would meet, I never would have believed it.  I still think the best thing about it is that it's a hobby we create for each other.  I've gotten so much enjoyment from other puzzlers that I'm really pleased to be able to share their efforts here.  This particular puzzle (first featured way back in 2011 for my first caching anniversary), besides being in theme was one of the local ones that sent me on a search for more puzzles outside of the immediate area that I could work on in the hopes of gaining enough practice to figure out what was going on.  The "puzzle-solving safari" that I referred to in my log for this cache is what ended up leading me to start this blog (which will have its own 10th anniversary in January):

It was five years ago this week that I took my first big solo caching adventure out to the San Francisco Bay area.  I had a huge stack of solved puzzles to work on finding, but also was able to meet up with many of the CO's I'd gotten to know via e-mail over the previous few years.  The other night I was looking back over my photos and rereading a bunch of the logs for the caches I was able to do.  What a great trip that was!  Since it doesn't look like I'll be traveling this summer, I'll have to content myself with reliving some previous adventures.  Today's fun puzzle was first featured back in 2013, and is one that I made the find on five years ago today:

Ted-E-Bear - 6/4/20

Today's puzzle takes us to Pennsylvania.  We live in an area with good-sized yards and a lot of trees, so it's not surprising to see a number of different critters in the neighborhood.  Over the years I've seen tons of squirrels, chipmunks, woodchucks, rabbits, deer, the occasional skunk, opossum, or fox, and once I even saw a coyote.  Yesterday I saw a picture on facebook of a house one street over from us with a bear walking around in front of it. Yikes! The Cribbage Master - 5/3/20

One of the things we've been doing during the last few weeks sitting at home is playing cribbage.  My husband and I dug the board out first, and then our son joined in some games with both of us in turn.  We haven't tried a three-handed game yet, but may do that shortly.  Whenever I play cribbage I think of my Dad, who we lost one year ago today.  Every time I visited him we would play hand after hand, often sitting on the back porch in the shade.  We played so often for so many years that I know exactly what he would say in response to pretty much any turn of events in the game, and as I've been playing recently I've heard his voice in my head many times.  I still have his cribbage board, complete with the scorch marks from when it was in the trunk of his car which caught on fire out in the desert back in the 1950's. I haven't brought myself to use it during these recent games, though.  It still feels too soon.  So today's New York puzzle is shared in honor and memory of my dad, a wonderful father and grandfather, educator, public servant, and:

P.P.S.  It took me three tries but I finally did get the last step of yesterday's featured puzzle this afternoon ... like I said, it was a doozy!

Logical - 4/27/20

I think sometimes it can be almost meditative to work on a puzzle where you know exactly what to do, it just takes a little bit of thought and persistence to get it done ... kind of like a really large jigsaw puzzle.  Logic puzzles can feel a bit like that, and so I thought it might be fun to return once again to the French series of "Grilles Logiques" that I've featured here before.  Today's is ranked as an easy (facile) one, but watch out for the last step ... it's a doozy.  I admit that having just seen it I'm going to save it for tomorrow since it's getting late.  Sharpen your pencil and have some fun with:

Getting Warmer - 4/26/20

It was a nice day here today, but the cool and wet weather is headed back tomorrow.  We've had a few glimpses of Spring, but it's certainly not here to stay.  But I have heard that it's:

Discombobulation - 4/25/20

Today we travel to Colorado for a puzzle by a CO whose work has appeared here frequently over the years.  This was one that I hadn't yet solved, but it caught my eye because this is a perfect description of how many of us are feeling these days:

Alcatraz - 4/24/20

Here's another puzzle that dropped into my inbox recently.  Like several of the people who've logged it, I have my own memories of visiting "The Rock" (on my first trip to San Francisco as a graduate student in the early 1990's).  In addition to the puzzle there's a lot of interesting information about the possible escape from:

Every Day is Earth Day - 4/23/20

I missed posting for the 50th anniversary of Earth Day yesterday, so I thought I'd rectify that today by featuring this perfectly themed Canadian puzzle that I shared back in 2013:

Puzzle Street East - 4/21/20

I remembered recently that there were a bunch of puzzles in the Nova Scotia "Puzzle Street" series that I still need to solve, and when I went to look for them I discovered that the CO also has a much shorter "Puzzle Street" series all the way over in Ukraine (I started to say "the" Ukraine, but confirmed this is the preferred usage).  So, today I'm serving up one of my favorites from the original series which I featured back in 2012:

I am a Bolt - 4/20/20

Last week I had fun talking about puzzle caching on the GeoGearheads weekly podcast.  As a result, I've had some puzzle recommendations coming in over the weekend and will be looking forward to sharing some of those with you in the coming days.  If you have any you've thought about sending me, I hope you'll take the time to do so.  Let's kick things off with this one from Western NY:

Counting the Days - 4/18/20

Today's puzzle takes us to Texas.  I went downtown the other day to pick up an essential item (dog food) and realized I don't think I had driven down the hill in at least a month.  I'm lookng forward to when it won't seem so strange to go out again. I know we're all just:

Yellow Jack - 4/17/20

Today's brand new puzzle takes us to Texas.  When I saw it I immediately was reminded of the 1938 movie "Jezebel," (for which Bette Davis won a Best Actress Oscar playing opposite a young Henry Fonda), but this puzzle led me to look up a little more information about the phrase:

Beginning Again - 4/16/20

Today I'm passing along a link to information about an online event coming up this Sunday that you might like to share with your geocaching friends, especially any puzzlers (or want-to-be puzzlers) among them.  The host is the author of the much referenced "How to Puzzle Cache" book, and the CO of today's puzzle, which I first featured back in 2013.  It's part of the Central Park "Gates" series, which have a wide variety of themes and difficulties.  This is probably one of the more challenging ones, but I found it very satisfying:

Dodger Blue - 4/15/20

Since there aren't any current games taking place right now, last night on ESPN they aired a rebroadcast of one of the most memorable games in World Series history, when an injured Kirk Gibson scored a pinch-hit walk-off homer to win the game.  It was the fall of 1988 and I was a junior in college, and a die-hard Dodger fan.  I flipped it on last night to catch a couple of innings, and just the sound of Vin Scully's voice was enough to make me a little misty-eyed, thinking back to all those years ago.  The great broadcaster is retired now, but in my google searching I came across a recently recorded message for baseball fans which I enjoyed hearing.  I'm looking forward to the time when I can once again root for the current:

April Showers - 4/14/20

I got rained on today trying to get the dog a little bit of a walk this afternoon.  It got me thinking about that old saying about the "April showers," which got me thinking about resharing this fun but challenging puzzle from back in 2016.  I hope you'll enjoy this:

A Farewell to John Conway - 4/13/20

I was saddened this weekend to hear of the passing of the well-known mathematician John Conway, reportedly due to COVID-19.  I was just discussing him recently with my friend CaptainMath, who had the pleasure of meeting him years ago.  His work inspired one of my own favorite puzzle creations, which I'll share here again with you today in his honor:

Hunting for Easter/Eggs - 4/12/20

Today we travel to New Mexico for a puzzle I first featured way back in 2012:

Hunting for Easter/Eggs

If you're celebrating today I hope you will find ways to enjoy the day, even under these highly unusual circumstances.  Several years ago I wrote this in my Easter post:  "Growing up I always enjoyed getting a new outfit, receiving a solid chocolate rabbit (eaten ears first, naturally), coloring and hunting for eggs (always followed by egg salad sandwiches), boisterous hymn singing, delicious ham, and permission once again break out the white shoes." Well, the candy has been purchased, I have my egg salad made, and the ham is ready to fix, but I'm not sure how much boisterous hymn singing there will be here in my living room while watching a service via youtube.

The current situation is so unfamiliar and scary, I think that people are processing it in a lot of different ways.  I've seen a number of articles reminding us to take care of ourselves, so let's head to Oklahoma for a little:

I'd heard that today's Minnesota puzzle was in the works a while back, and had fun going through it once my work week was finished last week. It's a sequel to a very creative puzzle I featured way back in  2015. I hope you'll enjoy:
