Mission Impossible - 5/13/19

I'm using another one of Ol'Fogie's recommendations for today, since I ended up being delayed a lot on my trip home Sunday.  It felt like a "mission impossible," honestly, but I did finally make it in the end, only about 6 hours late.  I woke up to a cancelled flight and a suggestion by the airline to just wait another day, which wouldn't work since I have exams to give.  I got a ticket on a different airline and then ended up having my Atlanta-bound flight diverted to Knoxville because of a problem with the landing gear (part of it was stuck "down," which is obviously better than stuck "up," but they told us it created extra drag on the plane, burning a lot of fuel so we couldn't make it to Atlanta and it was enough of an issue that they declared it an emergency landing).  I probably would have had enough time while I was waiting around for a replacement plane to go ahead and go and find some of Ol'Fogie's caches. Let's see where he's sending us today:

"Good afternoon, Geocacher.
Your mission, should you decide to accept it, is to solve this Cyprus puzzle in
order to find the correct coordinates. As always, should you or any of your team
be caught, we will disavow any knowledge of your actions. This blog will
self-destruct in five seconds. Good luck..."

A Wise Man - 5/10/19

Ol'Fogie writes:

Today’s Virginia puzzle is from my friend, biblemanrick. Rick has some really good
puzzles in the Wise, VA area and he is also the driving force behind the annual
Woodbooger event there. If you get the chance, attend the event sometime, enjoy
the quaint towns of Wise and Norton, and come prepared with Rick’s puzzles solved.
As for this one, if you make a correct deduction early in the final process, this
multi-layer conundrum can be a pretty quick solve. But, if you have trouble on
the final step, it can be tough to crack...

I'm stepping away today and providing you with another post from my back-up puzzle

Today’s Tennessee puzzle is a tale of horror around the small town of Reliance.
The description is creepy, but the cache itself is downright freaky!
Be sure and take a look at the image gallery for this one and, yes, the spiders and scorpions are real.
We made a point to do this one at night for full effect and it was one of the most bizarre finds
I’ve ever had. If you ever get down around the area and want a truly spooky cache, be sure and visit...

Think Spring - 4/8/19

Today's puzzle takes us to Rhode Island.  This weekend felt like the end of winter's hibernation in Ithaca.  Green shoots of flowers are starting to make their way out of the ground and everyone in my neighborhood was out taking care of spring yard cleaning chores, many of which had been postponed from months ago when our winter got off to an early and vigorous start.  I took my Christmas lights down (don't laugh ... my neighbor still had a browning pine wreath on her door) and we got all of the dead ornamental grass hacked back so that it can be replaced by new growth.  It felt good to be outside, and I'm hoping the decent weather is finally here to stay.  I'm ready to:

I Spy Knoxville - 3/24/19

Knoxville, TN holds a special place in my heart, as it's where I met my husband when we lived across the hall at an apartment-style dorm at UT one summer in college when we both did internships at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.  Here's what my guest blogger this week, Ol'Fogie, had to say about this puzzle he created in his own hometown:

A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words… or at Least a Set of Coordinates

The origins of the famous phrase “A picture is worth a thousand words” is very debatable; just Google it and you’ll see what I mean. I live in Knoxville,TN, and I’m quite content in my “scruffy little city by the river”, as the Wall Street Journal dubbed it prior to the 1982 World’s Fair.

So, what do those two things have in common? Well, I present you with a panoramic view of K-town in a “hidden-object” type puzzle. Step back to your childhood and play a game of...

Brand new computer - 3/5/19

Well, my old laptop computer didn't exactly die over the weekend, but it does feel like it's on life support so I'm preparing this post on a spiffy new one.  I should have known that after a hard fall where it pitched off the table onto its side and cracked the case a while back that it wouldn't last too long.  A couple weeks ago it started making a horrible noise that persisted for a little bit even after I shut it down, and as of yesterday the right-hand hinge was stuck and the frame around the screen was being held together with tape and a clamp.  So with all the chaos involved in procuring a new one and getting it set up, I was lucky to get a puzzle ready for you for today.  This one's from Illinois.  Guess I'd better put the:

I remember when going to the mailbox used to be exciting.  I always looked forward to seeing what might arrive.  These days we hardly ever get anything besides bills and advertising circulars.  It seems like even my e-mail is mostly advertising.  Today's puzzle takes us to Minnesota for an oldy but goody:

Snow Over Vegas - 3/2/19

I was amused by the photographs of Las Vegas during a recent, very unusual, snowfall.

I'm certainly glad I hadn't planned a winter getaway there during all of that.  We get enough of it here at home.  This Nevada puzzle from 2005 was passed along to me a while back, so let's make our own visit there today:

Chaos - 3/1/19

It's been a while since I featured a nice juicy puzzle for a Friday, but I've got one for you today.  This one takes us to Ohio, and a puzzle that was created as a group solve for what sounds like a fun puzzling event.  I'm sorry I couldn't make it to this one, but I still have very fond memories of the one I attended last summer.  Have some fun with:

You all probably know by now that I love a clever title, but this new Iowa puzzle made me blush.  It certainly did catch my eye, though, and I couldn't resist taking a peek.  I'm not even going to type the whole thing out.  Just trust me that it's OK.  Despite the NSFW title,:

A Missed Opportunity - 2/26/19

In grad school my department had a lot of folks involved in missions to both Venus and Mars. I remember well back in 1993 when the Mars Observer spacecraft was lost just before it was to take up residence in orbit around the red planet.  Years later it was fun seeing one of my former professors giving regular briefings about the successful rovers, Spirit and Opportunity.  It was sad for me to see that the stalwart little rover Opportunity had been pronounced lost last week after spending 15 years doing a mission that was supposed to last 90 days.  After looking at a lot of the coverage I knew I'd have to feature a puzzle in honor of the mission.  And while I didn't find one perfectly in theme, I think this puzzle from the U.K. does quite nicely.  I certainly doubt there will ever be mission another that will:

"Is this gonna be about ducks?" - 2/20/19

Today's Minnesota puzzle is another of those that dropped into my inbox last week, and with the Oscars coming up this weekend it seems like a timely posting.  I'll never forget going to this movie in junior-high.  I loved it but I'm not sure my not-quite-a-date knew what kind of movie it was going to be.  He whispered to me, "Is this gonna be about ducks?" during the opening of the film:

I've been made aware of some issues with the e-mail feed, but am not sure how extensive the problem is, why it happened, or when/how it may resolve.  Posts have been appearing daily as usual for the last week, but I don't think they've all gotten through to everyone.  If you'd like to confirm with me whether you're receiving the e-mails as usual or not, please do.  In the mean time I'll investigate if there's another way to set up daily notifications.

Back in Theaters - 2/13/19

Today's puzzle takes us to Oregon.  I heard on the radio the other day that some classic movies are being brought back to the big screen in very limited engagements.  I guess I'm old enough now that the word "classic" has taken on new meaning.  I couldn't believe that the "Karate Kid," which will be back in theaters on 3/31 and 4/2 is celebrating it's 35th anniversary this year.  Check your local listings today (just in time for Valentine's Day) if this was one of your:

Super Bowl Mystery - 2/4/19

By the time you see this Super Bowl 52 should be in the books.  I can't say have any strong feelings about who wins (although I do know who I'd like to see LOSE).  I'm not even sure if I'll tune in for the game, although it's always kind of fun to see what commercials will pop up.  Today's puzzle from Canada's province of Newfoundland & Labrador (yes, it's just one province ... I double-checked just to be sure) has us reliving some moments of Super Bowls past:

Sticky Situations - 1/21/19

Today's main puzzle takes us to Oregon.  But I wanted to kick things off with this Missouri cache.  Although there's not really any puzzle to it, it does highlight a particularly interesting bit of history that occurred 100 years ago last week, and which was the theme of the MIT puzzlehunt that happened over the weekend.  I had a chance to participate remotely this year, and it was fun, although a bit overwhelming due to the huge size of the operation and the very large teams involved:

Grandma Moses and the Molasses Flood of 1919

While there were a couple of spots where I made some decent contributions during the hunt, I spent quite a bit of time just watching other people work through the puzzles via the online spreadsheets.  Some of them were just crazy fast whereas most of the time these days I feel:

Slow as Molasses

P.S.  My favorite weatherman was a little off on his predictions ... we only got a foot of snow Saturday night.  But I'm not complaining.  That's definitely more than enough.

Bridges #8: Visually Pleasing

and if you like that one you might also enjoy:  Bridges #5: Fun & Amusing

I'll never forget caching up in Rochester one day and my friend questioning the route I was planning to take from one side of the Irondequoit Bay to the other.  "I'm just going to drive across the bridge," I said.  "There is no bridge!" she insisted.  I had just driven across it about two months earlier, so I knew there was a bridge there.  Except ... there wasn't.  It's only there in the winter months.  I had to see it to believe it.

I think I'm suffering from beach brain after lolling by the sea in Florida for a few days, so I'm grateful to Tennessee cacher Ol'Fogie for preparing today's post.  He writes:

Rome, GA, is one of the great puzzle-caching mecas of the world, especially to be

of Going Caching, my favorite mega event, and if you ever have the opportunity to

Geodyssey Tribute - 1/14/19

I've been fortunate to have spent the last few days vacationing with my sister in south Florida.  It's been a real treat to get away from the upstate NY winter for a bit and just loll on the beach.  I did take time out for a little bit of caching and had lunch with puzzle-maker-extraordinare epeterso2 of Puzzle Solving 101 and Geodyssey fame. We had first met when I was down here 6 years ago to do the "101" series, and I was tickled that the Geodyssey cache gave me another excuse to come back (although it obviously took me a while).  Since I've previously shared both of those puzzles before, I thought for today I'd go with this Florida cache, a:

Stylish! - 1/6/18

My geocaching friends know that I have issues with motion-sickness ... I always have to sit in the front seat (I'd prefer to be the driver, honestly), and can't look down at a map or my phone for more than a minute or two before I turn green. A bus ride to New York City has a similar effect, even if I don't try to read anything, and I've been known to walk out of a movie when I can't handle the jumpy camera work.  So I had to laugh the another day when an article featuring this stylish eyewear landed in my inbox (you can watch a humorous explanation and demonstration here.)

Resolution - 1/2/19

So, my resolution for this blog this year is to not be so far behind that I have to come find a post for the next day before I go to bed at night.  I've gotten way behind in my solving and so I don't have a nice stash of them saved up.  Back in the early days I could be two, or even three weeks ahead, but I spent this year really scrambling to stay caught up (which started to feel like work).  So, I resolve to work ahead but also to post reruns as needed.  With 8 years of posts to choose from, I've certainly got a lot of them. Remember, your submissions really help me out a lot ... perhaps you can resolve to send me some good ones?
