Read My Lips - 1/30/13

Today's puzzle from the United Kingdom involves a story about a dog and some smart squirrels.  I remember a smart squirrel from when I was growing up.  My mom would often put out stale crackers for the squirrels on our back porch, and it got to where one would come look in the window to see if we were there, and then rattle the storm door to get her attention so she'd put out a snack.  Enjoy the puzzle:

Tomorrow we'll check out another puzzle in the United Kingdom.

Half Right - 1/29/13

Today's puzzle comes to us from Nevada.  I'd never seen the quote before, but I guess I agree with Malcolm Forbes about being:

Sleb Slob - 1/28/13

A little birdie tells me that today's classic California puzzle will have a spoiler solution posted before long, now that it's been archived.  Here's your chance to take a shot at it before that happens.  You can always look back later on and see how you did with:

Sleb Slob

*NOTE*  Looks like I wasn't quite fast enough posting this one ... the answer appears in a note on the cache page, so don't read the CO's NOTE unless/until you get stuck.  Sorry about that.

Tomorrow we'll be in Nevada.

A Portable World - 1/23/13

I am always thankful when I come across a port-a-john in a time of need, but the photo for this California puzzle is a bit ridiculous.  I guess it really is true that:

Impossible - 1/18/12

The California puzzle I had scheduled for today was originally tricky, seeing that the:

Cache is Unpublished, but now, unfortunately, it is in fact un-solveable due to a geocaching.com update since I put it in the queue.  Sorry about that.  Here is a substitute Florida puzzle for you - an appropriate replacement for a puzzle that is now impossible, a:

Acrostic Cache - 1/17/13

Last fall I had a great deal of fun working on the Smithsonian's series of puzzles which culimated in a giant acrostic.  It was a series of related puzzles created by Jeopardy whiz (and fellow geocacher!) Ken Jennings.  If you missed these when they came out and would like to give them a shot, you can find them here:  http://puzzle.smithsonianmag.com/  Anyway, today's Texas puzzle gives you a taste of an:

C.I.P. - 1/13/13

I found this little series of caches in Florida, and thought it was a fun and unique idea ... a way to honor caches/cachers that are no longer active and recreate some fun from the past for a new generation of cachers.  From the "Cache in Peace" series:

C.I.P. Doc

Tomorrow we'll hang around in Florida for another day.

A side note:  I was discussing the fate of the useful "Purple Hell" site with another cacher recently, and learned that an archived version is available, at least for now ... use it while it lasts.

Cached Out - 1/3/13

When I was growing up down south, the traditional post-Christmas greeting was, "Was Santa Claus good to you?" I am happy to report that Santa was very good to me this year, and one of the items under my tree was this mystery novel:
Click for more information.
which was written by a geocacher (The Rat), features puzzle-making & solving geocachers in pivotal roles, and even includes geocaching puzzles to solve along the way.  What a great idea!  I considered sharing one of the puzzles from the book here, but decided I didn't want to spoil the fun if you end up reading it yourself.  Instead, I'm featuring a different California puzzle by the author, whose work has appeared here before.  We can see that as early as 2003 the author was already spinning entertaining stories like the one in:
