The Final Frontier - 8/31/22

Today's write-up is another from Ol'Fogie, and it gives me the opportunity to bid farewell to Nichelle Nichols, who passed away earlier this summer.  In sending us to England today, he  writes:

Another Puzzle From the Enterprise

I mentioned in a previous stint here that I grew up a Star Trek fan. I'm pretty sure I was hooked at my young age by the somber, intense opening words spoken by Captain Kirk. I can still vividly hear William Shatner speak those famous words…

Cat People? - 8/30/22

My first day went fine, but I'm happy to let Ol'Fogie keep steering the ship for a few days while I settle in.  Here's what he has for us today:

Everybody Wants to be a Cat

I am neither a "cat person" nor a "dog person." I like them both but my current family makeup only includes a feline. Jenny is both my finicky, but loving, furkid and bane of my existence. She purrs loudly as I rub her chin and then attacks my arm, using full claws and teeth, a millisecond later with absolutely no provocation on my part. Then, as the blood streams down my hand, she licks my nose and looks at me with remorseful eyes. No, I don't understand her, or any other cat for that matter. Today's puzzle was created in honor of a family whiskered one. Enjoy the art and mystery of…

Back to School! - 8/29/22

I'm back in the classroom today, so I'm allowing guest puzzle picker Ol'Fogie to take the wheel.  Here's what he has to say:

Sometimes the hardest part of hiding a cache is finding that perfect spot. It needs to elude the eyes of muggles and still be findable by your target caching audience based on the assigned difficulty. This Florida hider seems to have found a…

Batting 1.000 - 8/28/22

Today's puzzle takes us to California.  Something I searched recently has led to a huge number of posts about the Little League World Series popping up in my Facebook feed.  There are some pretty neat stories, but I've yet to see one about:

I Don't Know - 8/23/22

I went to the mall one day this summer, specifically aiming for the store where I usually get my manicure supplies.  The store had closed, though, and a furniture store had taken its place.  So I'm probably the only person in history to ever go shopping for nail polish and end up buying a couch.  Now that I have a better place to sit and watch TV with my husband, I've been watching a lot more baseball games.  Did that help with today's baseball-themed puzzle from Georgia that was passed along to me recently?:

I've known for a while now that the "follow by e-mail" feature that people had signed up for in the past was going to be disabled, and it appears that has now happened, at least for some folks.  This post is the first one that I'm trying to distributed via the new "google group" that I invited people to start joining last year, in anticipation of this change.  This will require me to post things in a little different way than I have in the past, so I'll ask for your patience as I figure it out and undoubtedly goof it up every once in a while.  If someone more tech savvy than I am has a suggestion of a simpler way to make this work, please feel free to get in touch.

Famous Lefties - 8/13/22

I've been saving this puzzle for today for a long time, since 8/13 is International Left-Handers Day.  I think I was a junior in high school when I started noticing the preponderance of left-handers I knew who were good at with math/science, or music, or sometimes both.  Being strongly dominantly right-handed myself, I sometimes used to try to exercise the other half of my brain by trying to write left-handed.  It never went very well.  Have some fun with these:

Scully's Cache - 8/4/22

Today's puzzle takes us to California.  I've mentioned before that I've been a baseball fan since the mid-1970's, when I started following the L.A. Dodgers.  Although I grew up in Tennessee, I was born outside of L.A., and we had a lot of family there.  I've always had a real soft spot for their wonderful announcer Vin Scully, and was saddened to learn of his passing this week.   In his honor, take a look at:
