A Neat Trick - 4/30/17

Sometimes you see something, and think, "Well, that's a neat trick.  It probably required a lot more thought to create than to solve.  Perhaps therein lie the seeds of another puzzle?"  At any rate, that was the feeling I had with today's Minnesota puzzle:

Today's puzzle takes us to Texas.  Trying to make plans that involve people who are not planners has me going bonkers lately.  But I'm doing my best to take a Zen approach to the whole thing, lest I be considered a:

What's next? - 4/28/17

I know that many of you are familiar with the "what's next" style of puzzle featured in today's puzzle from France.  This one was recommended to me recently, and I found it interesting how much more challenging it was to do one in another language.  Try your luck with:

Wacky Driving - 4/27/17

Today's puzzle takes us to Japan.  I'm not one to honk my horn at other cars lightly, but the other day I had two different occasions where people came close enough to hitting me that they earned a blast of the horn as a warning that I was there.  What is it with people?  Maybe there's something about springtime that leads to:

Anzac + 1 - 4/26/17

Yesterday I learned about Anzac day, which according to wikipedia is "a national day of remembrance in Australia and New Zealand that broadly commemorates all Australians and New Zealanders 'who served and died in all wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations" and "the contribution and suffering of all those who have served'. Observed on 25 April each year, Anzac Day was originally to honour the members of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) who fought at Gallipoli against the Ottoman Empire during World War I."  Today's Massachusetts puzzle was published just yesterday in honor of the holiday:

Where does the time go? - 4/24/17

I am constantly finding myself amazed at how fast time passes.  For those of us on the college calendar, summer will be here in just a few short weeks.  Today's puzzle from France is part of a series that explores the mysteries of time:

Kudos! - 4/23/17

One of the main reasons for me to start this blog was as a way to thank all of the great puzzle-making CO's out there.  I love that it provided a vehicle for a cacher from Canada's Prince Edward Island to do the same thing with the series from which this cache is taken:

Dönerstag Thursday - 4/20/17

I looked high and low for a puzzle to post in honor of last week's "Dönerstag" event, but wasn't able to find one in advance.  I've seen several pop up since then so I'm posting one of them here today.  I wasn't able to even find much about the holiday by googling ... whether it was because I didn't use the umlaut, whether I spelled it with the extra "n" (which just means "Thursday") or if I just missed something because I wasn't being referred to sites in German, I don't know.   I'm curious how much of a thing this really is in Germany.

I finally went back and read the geocaching announcement and (feel free to skip ahead if you already know this) it turns out the holiday is a play on the similarity between the German word for "kebob" and the beginning of the word "Thursday" so it's something like "kebob-Thursday."  I can't think of a good English equivalent at the moment but am familiar with the concept.  When I stayed with a family in France for a couple weeks as a high-schooler the dad had a funny habit of  trying to cover up a certain swear word by turning it into "Wednesday."  At any rate, this Ohio puzzle doesn't really talk about Dönerstag besides in the title, but I like to think of it as a "sudo-kubob."  Try your luck with:

Hard Boiled - 4/19/17

Today's puzzle takes us to Australia, and gives me the opportunity to relate another recent misadventure in the kitchen.  I got so engrossed in the puzzle I was working on that not only did I ignore the timer on the pan of eggs I had on the stove, but I completely forgot about putting them there in the first place.  I had noticed some funny noises but assumed it was either the dog with a bone or a squirrel (or something) outside.  By the time I went to investigate the water had completely boiled off and my eggs were something beyond:

So random - 4/18/17

Sometimes I see something online that makes me think, "That is so random."  For instance, this photo I saw recently:

Now I'm sure there's some perfectly logical reason for Patrick Stewart to be knitting ... in Santa Claus pajamas ... (maybe a movie role?) but sometimes the things you see really defy any possible explanation.  For example, some of the subjects of today's California puzzle:

Some Like it Hot ... 4/17/17

I undertook today's Pennsylvania puzzle as an educational project after an experience I had recently.  I've taken to chopping up sweet peppers to add to our salads since they add a little crunch and some nice color.  One small red, yellow, or orange pepper does quite nicely for just the two of us.  We had used up all the peppers I had on hand except for one kind of skinny red one and I questioned whether it was looking a little limp.  I asked my husband what he thought and he said he wasn't sure, but wasn't that a hot pepper anyway?  As I assured him I had only purchased sweet peppers, I took a slice off the end and popped it in my mouth to test its crunch.  Oh boy ... was I wrong about it being a sweet pepper.  Yikes! I'm sure that as these things go it wasn't *that* hot (my husband said that since I wasn't even sweating I must be OK), but since my taste runs to the very bland I was not a happy camper.  I'll be much more careful when picking my peppers from now on.  I'll never understand how:
