Grinchmas - 11/28/20

Now that Thanksgiving is behind us many of us are turning our eyes towards Christmas.  Today I'm sharing the first couple of puzzles in a cute series that popped up in Connecticut recently.  It's been quite a year already ... here's hoping that our celebrations don't turn into:

Happy Thanksgiving! -11/26/20

Over the years I have featured a lot of puzzles with a turkey or Thanksgiving theme. As I was looking over the possibilities for today's post I saw a lot of ones I had already shared but I also happened to notice a sequel to one featured back in 2018, which took us to Australia.  Since you can never have too much turkey on Thanksgiving, I'm sharing both the original and the previously unfeatured sequel here today:

An Audience of One - 11/24/20

Today's NYC puzzle is one that was recommended to me quite some time ago, but I haven't gotten around to sharing it until now.  I expect I was inspired by some of my recent television viewing involving:

Shall we play a game? - 11/22/20

Today's puzzle takes us to Australia.  We've always been big game players around here, and we recently went back to a game that we hadn't played in a long time.  The jury is still out on whether we're actually enjoying it or not.  It may turn out to be a bit like:

Gingerbread Men - 11/21/20

Today's puzzle takes us to Connecticut.  This time of year I end up watching all kinds of baking on television.  This past week's viewing included a gingerbread construction contest, several cookie challenges, and my favorite, the "Holiday Baking Championship."  I'm not a huge fan eating gingerbread myself, but one of my very few memories of my grandmother is making gingerbread men with her.  I hope you'll enjoy this:

First Snow-11/19/20

Today's puzzle takes us to Czechia.  It was later than last year, but I still wasn't ready to see our first blanket of snow for the season on the ground when I got up this morning.  This round won't last long, but we know it won't be long before we get more. At least noone has to shovel this pretty:

It's hard to believe Thanksgiving will be next week.  In honor of the upcoming festivities I'm featuring a North Carlina puzzle I first shared back in 2012, because:

Final Jeopardy - 11/9/20

Today's puzzle takes us to California. I was saddened today to hear of the passing of Alex Trebek. I have a lot of fun memories of watching "Jeopardy" with my parents and when the local TV station had a contest where you could win a chance to be on the show we all went and took the placement test in hopes of being chosen (Dad was the only one of us to score high enough to get in the running, but he wasn't the one picked to appear on the show).  It sounds like they still have enough taped shows to run for a few more weeks.  I suppose the show will go on somehow, but it's going to be pretty sad to watch Alex's final:

Classic - 11/8/20

Today's puzzle takes us to California.  It's a little late because I was on a zoom call with some classmates celebrating what should have been our homecoming weekend/30th reunion from college.  Despite the delay, I did want to get a post out, and this one's a:

Election Year - 11/4/20

Today's puzzle takes us to California.  My father was very interested and active in politics, and had an encyclopedic knowledge of political history.  I have many memories of watching the televised election returns with him and learning a lot from his commentary throughout the process.  It's too early to know for sure what's going to happen tonight, and how long it will take for the outcome to be clear.  It's certainly not been a typical:

Mmm ... cake - 11/3/20

Today's puzzle takes us to Oklahoma.  My big accomplishment yesterday was baking my favorite chocolate cake (the "Reine de Saba" from Julia Child's "Mastering the Art of French Cooking").  My mother used to make it for her French students when I was a kid and I would routinely request it as a birthday cake.  I only bake one about every 10 years or so, but I figured this was the perfect year to indulge.  I have definitely not mastered the art of French cooking, but it did turn out well in the end despite a couple of minor mishaps along the way.   If you ever go to all the trouble to make one, I'd recommend doing like I do and make a double recipe so you'll have a two-layered cake.  It's so dense and fudgy I'd never try it as a:
