Something for Eternity - 3/31/18

I was able to do a nice little puzzle run up to Syracuse yesterday and collected 10 quickie "planetary pursuits" puzzles, an Easter-themed cache where I saw a cotton-tailed rabbit within 50 feet of stage one's plastic egg field puzzle, and 3 regular puzzles, one of which I'm sharing with you today.  As expected, we got quite muddy, but kept the car from being totally messed up by putting down newspapers on the floor-mats just like my friend tiki tour used to do.  Even with a little bit of snow on the ground up there I managed to bring home a tick.  I hate, hate, hate ticks but hadn't even thought to spray for them yet.  I should know better.  Have some fun with:

Where, oh where ... - 3/30/18

Today's puzzle takes us to Texas, where I'm betting it's actually springtime by now.  Here in upstate New York the season immediately following winter is called "Mud."  I'm planning to get out and do my first puzzle run of the year today, and am betting I'll come home covered in it.  I'm hoping my geosenses will wake up after their long winter's nap and I won't be muttering things like:

Where did Ralph hide the doggone cache?

Puzzling with Friends - 3/28/18

Today we travel to a puzzle in California that was a joint creation by two of the cachers I puzzled with all last week during a tough online puzzle hunt.  It was a great way to spend my spring break, although I feel like my brain now needs its own vacation.  Enjoy this one:

A man walks into a bar ... - 3/27/18

Today's puzzle takes us to Minnesota.  If you haven't puzzled in this particular neck of the woods before, then you might not be familiar with their encoding method.  But that won't really matter as long as you just follow the directions.  Stop me if you've heard this one:

Fried Red Eye - 3/26/18

I've spent a great deal of time over the last week working on an online puzzle hunt with some fellow geocachers.  It has been so much fun but also really frustrating at times.  These types of things are so far over my head that I get very out of my depth ... but I figure that's the only way to learn and improve.  But I certainly can't say that my time off has been very restful.  I've been staying up way too late and am mentally drained.  Today's Missouri puzzle provides a good desription of me by the time this is all done:

So Little Time - 3/25/18

Today's puzzle takes us to California.  I apologize for the late posting.  Even though I have had a lot of time on my hands this week (it's my Spring break), I have had no trouble filling it and really question where the time goes.  I could certainly use more ... so many projects, so many puzzles:

Wordplay - 3/20/18

Today's puzzle takes us to Georgia for a puzzle movie-theme puzzle involving a New York Times Crossword.  I chose it so I could promote a documentary movie I saw recently about the New York Times Crossword puzzle and those who create and solve them.  It's called "Wordplay" and it's been out for a while (2006, I believe) but I hadn't heard of it until recently.  While I can't say I'm a crossword specialist, I really enjoyed the movie and I think most puzzlers will too ... there's a nice little aha moment along the way.  I'll relate more of my recent crossword adventures in another post soon.  In the meantime, please have some fun with:

In Honor of Stephen - 3/16/18

I didn't have to look too far in my search for a puzzle to honor the memory of Stephen Hawking, who passed away on Wednesday.  It has been noted that the date of Hawking's death coincided with Einstein's birthday (March 14), and that the date of his own birth (1/8/42) coincided with the 300th anniversary of Galileo's death. Today's cental New York puzzle was created back in 2011 to say:

Spring Forward Into Spring? - 3/11/18

For those of us in (most of) the U.S. today is the day that we "spring forward" into Daylight Saving Time.  I have never been a particularly early bird, so while I do miss that extra hour of sleep, having longer days in the evenings is definitely my preference.  Even without relying on our timepieces, it's undeniable that the days are getting longer and that Spring must not be too far away. Maple sugaring season is in full swing and I've even seen a couple of brave green sprouts poking their heads out of the ground.  The little frogs they call "spring peepers" will be out and peeping before long.  With today's puzzle from Utah, you can create your own:

One Fine Pine in the Midwest - 3/8/18

Not long ago I had some feedback that someone would like to see more puzzles from the Midwest.  I think today's Iowa puzzle fits that category quite nicely.  It's kind of interesting to think about what exactly the "Midwest" is anyway ... I received a notice about a regional meeting referred to as a "Midwest Institute" that was going to be in Denver.  Denver?  I don't know many people that would call Colorado the Midwest.  But I digress ... enjoy today's puzzle, which is:

Mr. Rogers, It's You I Like - 3/7/18

On February 19th 1968, just a few months before I made my own debut into the world, the classic children's television show "Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood" first aired.  I grew up watching his show, and even after I had really out-grown it, I remember turning it on once in a while during a rough day just to hear someone say "I like you, just the way you are."  A 50th anniversary special premiered last night, and I'm pleased to be able to feature today's Pennsylvania puzzle about a fun tribute right in the neighborhood of his Pittsburgh television studio:

Dinomite #2: Won't you be my dino?  (You'll note that the related web page is broken, but should still be able to find what you need).

Play it By Ear - 3/6/18

Today's puzzle takes us to Colorado.  I can't say I have perfect pitch, but I do have a pretty good ear for music.  I've always found the connection between music and physics to be pretty cool, and wish I knew more about music theory.  Here's your chance to get a little introduction to the field:

And the Winner Is ... - 3/4/18

I used to go to the movies all the time, but over the years with the rise of many more options for watching at home (along with the rising price of the tickets) I've found myself venturing out only rarely.  So I wasn't really surprised when I realized that it was Oscar time and I hadn't seen any of the movies.  I was surprised, though, that I'd never even heard of at least half of the Best Picture nominees.  I'll probably tune in for at least some of the ceremony tonight ... even if I'm not informed enough to make my own picks, it's fun to see what people are wearing and whether things will go off without a hitch (that was some "hitch" last year).  Maybe I'll even spot a movie I'd like to see.  With today's California puzzle I give you the opportunity to do a little homework for:

Well, I've goofed up two days in a row now, with a late post followed by a link to nowhere.  Here's hoping that I can get today's Tennessee puzzle posted without any issues.  Judging by its title I must not be the only one with occasional "post"ing difficulties:

Winter is (still) here - 3/1/18

Today's puzzle will keep us right here in central New York.  I apologize for the late posting - I seem to have conked out last night before I took care of this item on my to-do-list.  Fortunately I have today off due to a "mid-winter" break in the form of a nice long weekend.  Mother nature is doing her best to cooperate - my daily weather forecast e-mail is showing a snow forecast of 9 inches for tomorrow.  You can guess how I feel about that.  It should be a good day to do some quilting and puzzling - my favorite tasks when:
