More Numb3ers - 12/30/13

For one of our last puzzles of 2013, I thought I'd share this California one with the number thirteen in the title.  I like the fun way the CO allows remote solvers to confirm their solves on:

Boxes for Boxing Day - 12/26/13

Today's puzzle takes us to Finland, where you'll get to practice a skill I am notoriously bad at.  Unfortunately this skill comes up frequently in sewing, and I have been known to cut and/or sew pieces together in every possible wrong way.  I never realize I have goofed up until after I have it put together and it turns out wrong!  Have some fun with:

Boxes - Spatial Visualization

Tomorrow we'll be in California.

Just Bluffing - 12/23/13

Just Bluffing

Tomorrow we'll be spend Christmas Eve in Idaho.

Kama Sutra Cipher - 12/22/13

Rear Window - 12/19/13

Earlier this year I had the chance to visit the virtual cache "It's a Wonderful Life," and I expect many people are enjoying that movie for the umpteenth time this year.  Jimmy Stewart has always been one of my favorite actors ... I think I first saw him on TV in "No Highway in the Sky," playing a scientist convinced that an airplane's tail was going to fall off.  Today's Pennsylvania puzzle features another of his classic movies:

Rear Window

Tomorrow we'll be in France.

A Merry Xmas on Christmas Island - 12/18/13

If you've been following this blog for very long you'll know that I happen to love holiday-themed puzzles.  As such, it shouldn't come as a surprise to hear that I was tickled to come across a puzzle located on Christmas Island entitled:

A Merry Xmas

P.S.  If you don't remember exactly where Christmas Island is, click on the map on the cache page and zoom out.  It was quite a surprise to me to see that geocaching.com reports its location as being 10,219.1 miles north from my home location in New York(!)  I guess that's one way to think about it.

Tomorrow we'll be in Pennsylvania.

Hallelujah! - 12/17/13

I enjoyed writing holiday-themed puzzles in 2011 and 2012 for our monthly puzzle series, and even though we didn't keep up the puzzle of the month this year, I thought it would be fun to continue this part of the tradition, perhaps prompting central New York puzzlers to say:

Hallelujah! It's Another Holiday Music Puzzle!

Tomorrow we'll pay a visit to Christmas Island.

I recently had an inquiry about following the blog by e-mail, so I investigated and added a gadget to the page for that purpose.  I have no idea how well this feature works, but figured it was worth giving it a try.  Every so often you'll see one publish prematurely, but I hope to keep those to a minimum.

Santa's Fifth - 12/9/13

My experience with today's California puzzle echoes the finder who wrote:  "When I saw the title, I wasn't sure whether the reference was to a musical composition, e.g. The Fifth of Beethoven, an extreme weight loss program, or Santa has been hitting the Holiday Cheer a trifle early."  See what you can make of:

Santa's Fifth*  Link fixed.  Sorry!

A Square in China - 12/6/13

Today we pay our first virtual visit to China.  At the time I looked into it, there were only 14 puzzle caches in the whole country, so I guess it wasn't too surprising I hadn't featured one so far.  The puzzle is:

A magic square ?

Tomorrow we'll pay a visit to a geo-art Christmas tree in Canada's Ontario province.

Thursday, December 5, 2013

Noel Enigma - 12/5/13

Miriam and Christoper - 12/2/13

Today's California puzzle, created way back in early 2004, is:

Miriam and Christopher Moss

Tomorrow we'll be in California another day.

It's December and that means we're nearing the end of another full year of Puzzles of the Day.  I've enjoyed hearing from a few new readers lately, and am planning to continue in 2014 for as long as it remains fun, and doesn't start to feel like work.  I'm considering doing a "best of" puzzle once a week, going back to a previously featured puzzle that I really liked.  I'd also like to have a "viewer's choice" once a week, featuring a puzzle submitted by a reader.  Those submissions are really appreciated, so I'm hoping that in 2014 every regular reader would be willing to submit at least one fun puzzle they have created or enjoyed.  You can send it by commenting on any puzzle (I screen comments before they publish) or by contacting me (teamajk) through geocaching.com.

The In-Crowd - 11/18/13

I was recently perusing certitude and came across this California puzzle.  Since I knew who exactly who it referred to, I decided to check it out.  In doing so, I discovered that there is new entry in the mystery series written by The Rat.  I haven't had a chance to read it yet (I have it on good authority it will be waiting for me under the tree on Christmas morning) but I decided I shouldn't wait to congratulate the author and feature another of his fun crossword puzzles here.  See if you can break into:

Focus! - 10/16/13

Sometimes I start a puzzle only to be distracted by other things.  More often, though, I find that a good puzzle can distract me from the other things I should be doing.  As mystery author Lawrence Block blogged recently:  "Nothing so spurs one’s creative energy as the need to avoid essential work."    I wonder how many folks reading this today have found that to be true?
Whatever the task, today's puzzle from Canada's Alberta province reminds us how important it is to:

1000 Days of Geocaching Puzzle of the Day - 9/26/13

Today marks the 1000th day of the Geocaching Puzzle of the Day.  What started out as a challenge to myself to see if I could solve a good puzzle for every day of the year has turned into an almost three year long odyssey - and what a fun trip it has been.  While it's also been a lot of work, I have really enjoyed  seeking out clever, unique, and intricate puzzles written by wonderfully creative people, many of whom I have had the pleasure of chatting with via e-mail, and some of whom I've even been able to meet in person.

Since many cachers mark the 1000 cache milestone with a golden ammo can, I thought it would be fun to share a golden ammo puzzle with you.  I originally had a different puzzle in mind, but since I recently celebrated my 1000th find with a fun golden ammo can puzzle puzzle created by Ithacadoodle (one of the puzzlers who got me into this hobby in the first place), I hope you'll indulge me for sharing:

The Gambler - 9/9/13

In case you missed the story behind this week's featured puzzlers, I recently got a message from a reader asking me if I had seen the work of the Utah puzzlers Mom the Cook and cashnhubby.  He was interested in having me feature some of their puzzles as a way to wish them well and thank them for all the inspiration they have provided him as a puzzle maker.  Being a big fan of Kenny Rogers back in the day, I had to include:

Today's California ecrane puzzle features a television show which is watched regularly at our house, although not usually by me.  I have heard enough of it to know that the dialogue can be quite fast-paced and witty, and you never know what one character is going to come up with after he says:

The Art of Noyes - 8/19/13

One of the things I have enjoyed about this puzzling hobby of mine is getting to know puzzlers by the puzzles they write and the logs they post.  On my cachecation to Florida earlier this year, I was tickled, yet surprised, to discover a familiar name in some of the logs I was signing:  ecrane.  I recognized his name because I knew he had written some fun puzzles ... in California, though, not Florida.  In honor of that fun coincidence I thought it would be great to spend a week looking at some of his California puzzles.   We'll start things off with:

The Art of Noyes

Tomorrow, another of ecrane's California puzzles.

Sunday, August 18, 2013

Original Score - 8/11/13

Today's California puzzle, passed along to me by someone who enjoyed it, reminds me of those summers long ago when going to the movies was a fun and inexpensive way to get out of the heat for a few hours.  When a new summer blockbuster came out, I would often see it in the theater more than once, and more than likely it had an:

FL-ACA 8/8/13

One of the things I enjoy about doing this blog is seeing cases where puzzles I have posted inspire other CO's to create their own versions of those puzzles.  In a few cases, I have even been able to make finds on those 2nd (or even 3rd) generation puzzles.  Today's central New York puzzle is an example of one such puzzle I hope to be able to go and find soon:

The CO of today's Illinois cache was inspired by a puzzle seen on vacation (or, "cachecation," as it says in the description), and created a version back at home.  I love the way the CO gives proper credit to the original puzzle maker instead of committing:

Grand Theft Puzzlery

More Figure Logic - 8/2/13

Early last month I wrote about one of my new puzzling friends and her work as a math/logic puzzle creator, and featured the first in her new logic puzzle cache series.  Since then I've been able to work through the rest of them (that have been published so far, anyway!) and was even able to go and make the finds.  These definitely got trickier as they went along, so it will be interesting to see how I do with anything harder than:

The Other Guys DNF - 7/26/13

I recently passed through Hershey, PA, and loved seeing the names of some of the streets there.  I can just imagine being able to give these directions to my house:  "From Chocolate Avenue, go south on Cocoa Avenue, then west on Almond Drive and around to Goodbar Court." Yum.  Just like those street names caught my eye, this puzzle from the same area caught my eye because of its name.  It's always fun to find a cache that:

Figure Logic - 7/9/13

One of the things I love about this "puzzling" hobby is the interesting folks that I have been able to meet, both in person and on-line.  One of those interesting people belongs to the caching team that are the CO's of today's central New York puzzle.  She has a long history of publishing this kind of puzzle (and other kinds as well) in magazines like "Math and Logic Puzzles" and it was fun to see her put that talent to use in creating a series of geocaching puzzles starting here:

Tintin in Paris - 6/28/13

A new caching friend of mine was planning a trip to Paris recently, and asked if I had ever looked at the Tintin series of puzzles caches, some of which are located there.  I had not seen them before, but we set out to see what we could make of them.  I wasn't sure what I was in for: Tintin was a character I knew nothing about, all the puzzles had with medium to high difficulty ratings ... and many were written only in French.  What we found was a challenging, complex group of multi-layered, well-done puzzles.  This one was a good starting spot, since it included an English translation:

Le Secret de la Licorne (Be sure to translate the message when you get the green light).

Tomorrow we'll be back in California.

Two Shades of Gray - 4/12/13

Someone (you know who you are!) sent me a puzzle recently that he had enjoyed.   I had an idea how it might work, but it turned out that idea was wrong.  I knew there had to be at least one puzzle out there that used the idea I had thought of, and it turned out I was able to find one without too much trouble.  The funny thing is, both the puzzle he sent me and the puzzle I found had exactly the same name.  So, today I offer you:

Shades of Gray from California and Shades of Gray from Pennsylvania.

Tomorrow we'll be in California to kick off a whole week of cipher puzzles.

Slitherlink - 3/21/13

For the past year or so I have enjoyed subscribing to "World of Puzzles" magazine, a bi-monthly spinoff of "Games" magazine.  This month's issue (the cover says "Spring 2013") features a special bonus section of puzzles written by a fellow cacher from north of the border.  These puzzles aren't caching related, but he talks about writing geocaching puzzles, and it turns out that the May, 2011, issue of the magazine actually featured a special bonus section composed of geocaching puzzles he had written just for them. Very cool, indeed!  I'm hoping I can track down that issue so I can try the puzzles for myself.   Today I'm featuring the first of a series he put out:

Acrosticache - 3/18/13

Today's California puzzle is of a type I featured a couple of months ago, but this one is unique and fun for a couple of reasons.  One reason is that the CO has invited any interested cachers to use this exact same puzzle for their own hides (you'll see how this is possible when you read the listing) and the other ... well, to discover that one you'll have to solve:

Tomorrow we'll head over to Utah.

Champagne Wishes - 3/16/13

I think today's California puzzle references the signature phrase of a different celebrity, but my first thought was of a certain band leader who would have turned 110 earlier this week, and whose music continues to entertain on PBS.  I can remember sitting around watching Lawrence Welk with my grandmother and parents, and when my daughter was young she enjoyed watching the costumes and dancing from back in the day.   Here's a toast to you along with:

Champagne Wishes

Tomorrow we'll celebrate St. Patrick's day in North Carolina.

Meridian - 3/12/13

Today's puzzle is another in the Nevada series we visited yesterday, and it taught me something new.  Try your luck with:

Puzzle Me This #16: Meridian

Tomorrow another from this series.

Knowing of my love of puzzles, my dad sent me an article from the March 11, 2013 "Time" magazine, entitled "The Answer Men," which I highly recommend.  It talks about the lure of puzzling and the World Puzzle Championship.   If you can get a copy of that issue, I think you will find it interesting.  My favorite line:  "A well-constructed puzzle leads you down a particular chain of reasoning to a specific elegant or counter-intuitive cognitive leap, and as you make it, you know at that moment that you're making precisely the same leap the puzzle designer did.  There's a moment of silent intellectual communion, of shared aha!"  Well said.

Just Slide Along - 3/10/13

Several of the puzzles in the Nevada series we're visiting this week require you to play a game or complete a task in order to receive the cache coordinates.  It was a good thing for me there was no minimum time required to complete:

Tomorrow, another from this series.

Very Structural - 3/4/13

I'm sure we've all had the experience where we solve a puzzle in a way that the CO didn't intend.  I recently realized that I oversimplified the method in solving a New York City puzzle I had posted here a while back , and which even inspired one of my own puzzle creations. I only realized what I had missed when I came across another presentation of the same idea in Pennsylvania.   I wonder how many other folks actually did the original puzzle following the requirements outlined in:

Very Structural

Tomorrow we'll be in New York City.

Deer Tracks - 2/26/13

One of the things we couldn't believe when we moved into our house was how many deer we have in the neighborhood.  They are fearless and congregate in large numbers.  We've often wondered how they spread the word about where the "party" is.  It's no wonder when it snows our yard is full of:

Director - 2/24/13

The title of today's California puzzle reminded me of when my husband to convince me to join him as a competitive duplicate bridge player.  I found the process to be very fun when you were doing well, but excruciating when you were doing badly.  I always lived in fear that I would play a card out of turn or make some other mistake prompting our opponents to raise a hand and call out in a firm voice for the:
