Leap Before You Look! - 2/29/16

It's obviously not very often that I get to post a puzzle in honor of Leap Day, so I decided to share two at once.  From California, start off with some:

Tiny Leaps

and then I hope you'll indulge me for sharing another of my own:

A Dog's Story - 2/28/16

Today's Rhode Island puzzle is intended to be solved in the field, but with a little research it can be done remotely.  I wanted to feature it here because I love the history behind:

Cody Cook and Jen IthaCow - 2/26/16

I recently had a CO in New Jersey request some assistance with a puzzle, and in working through it with him I had the opportunity to learn an awful lot about how GPS receivers work.  Given that this technology makes our hobby possible, it's a pretty neat thing to research.  Watch for the cameo appearance by yours truly towards the end of this story from the:

Behead Me?! - 2/25/16

While it sounds like an example of a rather creative curse, Behead Me is actually the title of the newly released novel by Russell Atkinson, aka The Rat.  It's the 6th mystery featuring geocacher/lawyer/retired F.B.I agent Cliff Knowles, aka CliffNotes, and while I've enjoyed all of the novels, regardless of whether or not caching was involved in the plot, I have it on good authority that "this one will make geocachers happy."  I haven't read it yet myself, but seeing that there's an ammo can right on the cover, it's looking good.  I'm looking forward to this one taking its place on my bookshelf with its predecessors.  Today's California puzzle is one that does not appear in the book itself, so you won't spoil anything if you:

Behead Me Again

Aww Man!!! - 2/24/16

The subject of today's Wisconsin puzzle is something I'm more familiar with than I would like ... but when I see it I've been known to utter something much worse than:

Aww Man!!!

Headlines - 2/19/16

I've featured puzzles from this nicely done series in Oregon before, but wanted to be sure to come back to it again to highlight a neat event they're having there tomorrow.  The CO is hosting an "Introduction to Ciphers and Codes" lesson/workshop and it looks like he's going to have a great crowd.  There's a lot to learn but with some persistence and dedication folks can work up to ones like:

Puzzled 19: Extra! Extra! Read all about it!

(Even if you don't try this one, don't miss the "breaking news" at the bottom of the listing.)

Decimal Day - 2/16/16

45 years ago yesterday the United Kingdom and Ireland decimalized their currencies, thus doing away with the system in which the British pound (abbreviated with a script L) was divided into 20 shillings (abbreviated s), each of which was worth 20 pence (abbreviated with a d ... you'll find out why in the  puzzle).  I found today's Colorado puzzle particularly interesting, as it required learning about that old monetary system in its official version as well as some of the slang words I'd heard of, but wasn't sure exactly what they meant.  So, the puzzle really is about pre-1971 British money, although the title is:

Llanfair... - 2/13/16

Today's Colorado puzzle is posted in honor of the "A" in teamajk, who has made a hobby of memorizing the type of facts described in the write-up for this puzzle.   I found it amusing that one of these was Welsh, as I've always found it a rather fascinating language.  Not long ago I pasted some French text into google translate and was confused why it was identifying it as Welsh ... turns out I had pasted it in ROT-13.  Sounds about right, don't you think?  :)  And now for the puzzle:

Gravity - 2/12/16

Today we travel to Norway for a puzzle I'm sharing in honor of yesterday's incredibly exciting announcement of the detection of gravitational waves.  It was a day long in the making, and I feel a personal connection to it because my husband has been working in that field for over 20 years.  Some of the videos using computer models shown during the NSF press conference were done by his working group.  Three cheers for all of the scientists involved in unraveling the mysteries of:

My cow - 2/8/16

When I was a child, I really wanted to have a cow.  Not "have a cow" as in "throw a temper tantrum," but I wanted a real live cow.  Milk was (and still is) a favorite beverage and I thought it would be so convenient to have our own right in the back yard.  It seemed big enough.  We lived in a semi-rural area and I saw cows on the way to school every day, so it didn't seem that unreasonable.  My parents did not agree. While I never did get my real live cow, I have been gifted things like cow slippers, a cow clock, etc.  Finally this past Christmas, I got my cow. It's probably not far from life-sized for a calf, at least.  You can see that geodog "K" is not quite sure what to make of it:

At any rate, now you can see why, when I saw today's California puzzle, I had to feature it in honor of:

My cow, Your cow, What cow ?

A Shifty Little Puzzle - 2/5/16

I had to laugh when I saw the background image for today's California puzzle.  My daughter has a stuffed pillow version of that emoji that she received from a friend.  When I first saw it I thought it was supposed to be a Hershey's kiss ... but, it wasn't!  Anyway, this is really:

Solve The Really Impossible Mystery Kashe, Ok? - 2/1/16

Today's puzzle takes us to Ohio, where a creative reviewer gave me the title for today's post.  Have some fun with a:

Strimko Conundrum

P.S.  If you didn't check out the new puzzle creation by epeterso2  that I mentioned on Friday, it's more geocaching-related than I was expecting, and is a ton of fun.  I haven't been that sucked in to anything in quite a while. Read all about it here: Geodyssey.
