Go Dodgers! - 10/25/24

With our beloved Minnesota Twins out of the baseball playoffs, I decided to root for the team I followed closely as a kid.  I started watching baseball and became a Dodger fan in 1977.   Although we moved had away before I turned a year old, it seemed natural to follow the team closest to where I was born since there wasn't a team close to where we lived.  They proceeded to get to the World Series that year and the next (losing to the Yankees both years and launching my lifelong willingness to cheer for any team playing against them), and then again in 1981 and 1988 (winning both, the first against the Yankees). It was quite some time before I realized how fortunate it was to get to the Fall Classic so often. In honor of this year's team and all the great former Dodgers I'm re-sharing this early puzzle of mine which featured both my husband's and my favorite players:

In Memoriam - 10/24/24

I learned early this morning that one of my good (albeit distant) geocaching friends had passed away.  His puzzles have been featured here regularly over the years, so please don't be surprised if I am tempted to revisit some of them in the coming days.  He wasn't only a top notch puzzler, but had a great sense of humor and an incredibly generous spirit.  This is the puzzle that launched our ten-year long history of correspondence, conversations, mutual beta-testing, and two super trips I took to Ohio.  Rest well, my friend.

Geocaching Summer Olympics - 6/27/24

Although my own athletic prowess peaked very early (2nd place 8 and Under Backstroke in our City Championship meet in 1970-something), I have always been an Olympics junkie. As I look forward to this year's competition in Paris I've caught a little of the US qualifying for some of the events, including swimming and diving.  I never tried diving myself, and have only watched it in person at my daughter's swim meets (I have some fond memories of serving as the announcer at a number of home meets).  I had fun going through this Minnesota puzzle, and will probably return to more in the series:

Today I have two puzzles for you, one from Pennsylvania and another from Oklahoma. It turns out, they both have the same name and connections to CacheSleuth and me.  I had reached out to ask him for help in implementing a new puzzle cache, and in talking about it I found out he was working on a new cache using his own implementation of something I'd used before (but he hadn't ever seen mine).  It was pretty funny when we also ended up independently giving our new puzzles the same name.  I guess you could say we were:

Super Furry Animals - 5/14/24

I'm not sure how I came across this puzzle from the UK, but the title made me smile.  When we first moved into our house, our kids were fascinated by the "furry animal" who routinely popped up in the back yard, having taken up residence under our shed.  We later figured out that it was a woodchuck, but to this day when we see one back there (likely it's great-great-great-great grandchild) we still call it the "furry animal."  Here's another kind of:

I just recently archived the puzzle I referred to in post below, which I'm pasting in its entirety from 8 years ago today:

Five years ago for Cinco de Mayo I placed a cache that used the Mexican Army cipher.  Here's a little history I included:  Cinco de Mayo (Spanish for "fifth of May") is a holiday held on May 5 that commemorates the unlikely victory of the Mexican army over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, under the leadership of General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguín. While Cinco de Mayo sees limited significance in Mexico itself, the date is observed mostly in the United States as a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride. Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico's Independence Day (September 16), the most important national patriotic holiday in Mexico. I read an interesting article the other day about the Voyager I spacecraft and how NASA was able to correct a glitch and get it sending intelligible data again.  At over 46 years old, it's not surprising that it's showing its age, but I got to thinking about the state of technology in 1977, and truly marvelled that we can send instructions to fix it from a distance of 15 BILLION miles away!  So in honor of the hardy explorer (and its twin, which is also still going)  I'm posting this puzzle from Canada's Ontario province:

I told you I'd report back on our eclipse experience.  Unfortunately the weather did not cooperate and the sun was not visible behind the clouds and we sat out in a light rain.  BUT, it did get fully dark, which was pretty cool.  I don't regret making the trek to totality, as it was only a couple of hours and we were able to catch up with my cousin and his family.  But I sure would like to get to see it under optimum conditions.  Maybe someday?? But not in NY.  The next chance anywhere in NY is 2079, and it won't get this far north even then.
