Sticky Situations - 1/21/19
Today's main puzzle takes us to Oregon. But I wanted to kick things off with this Missouri cache. Although there's not really any puzzle to it, it does highlight a particularly interesting bit of history that occurred 100 years ago last week, and which was the theme of the MIT puzzlehunt that happened over the weekend. I had a chance to participate remotely this year, and it was fun, although a bit overwhelming due to the huge size of the operation and the very large teams involved:
Grandma Moses and the Molasses Flood of 1919
While there were a couple of spots where I made some decent contributions during the hunt, I spent quite a bit of time just watching other people work through the puzzles via the online spreadsheets. Some of them were just crazy fast whereas most of the time these days I feel:
Slow as Molasses
P.S. My favorite weatherman was a little off on his predictions ... we only got a foot of snow Saturday night. But I'm not complaining. That's definitely more than enough.

A Bridge Too Close - 1/20/19
As I sit here in upstate New York my favorite weatherman has predicted 21 inches of snow for us this weekend. Yikes. I'll follow up and let you know how it turns out.
I figured I'd follow up on yesterday's bridge-related puzzles with this one, from Colorado:

Visually Pleasing - 1/19/19
Today's central New York puzzle is part of a series that's been popping up recently. The puzzle isn't difficult, but I certainly found it not only interesting but:
Bridges #8: Visually Pleasing
and if you like that one you might also enjoy: Bridges #5: Fun & Amusing
I'll never forget caching up in Rochester one day and my friend questioning the route I was planning to take from one side of the Irondequoit Bay to the other. "I'm just going to drive across the bridge," I said. "There is no bridge!" she insisted. I had just driven across it about two months earlier, so I knew there was a bridge there. Except ... there wasn't. It's only there in the winter months. I had to see it to believe it.

Roman Panorama - 1/15/19
I think I'm suffering from beach brain after lolling by the sea in Florida for a few days, so I'm grateful to Tennessee cacher Ol'Fogie for preparing today's post. He writes:
Rome, GA, is one of the great puzzle-caching mecas of the world, especially to be
such a relatively small town (pop 36,407 as of latest census). It is also the home base
of Going Caching, my favorite mega event, and if you ever have the opportunity to
attend, I strongly encourage you to do so. Unlike a lot of events that are just large
“meet-n-greets”, this is a week-long caching extravaganza designed around puzzle
caches. I have published others in the area before in this blog and there will
assuredly be more, but this “starter” puzzle provides a...

Geodyssey Tribute - 1/14/19
I've been fortunate to have spent the last few days vacationing with my sister in south Florida. It's been a real treat to get away from the upstate NY winter for a bit and just loll on the beach. I did take time out for a little bit of caching and had lunch with puzzle-maker-extraordinare epeterso2 of Puzzle Solving 101 and Geodyssey fame. We had first met when I was down here 6 years ago to do the "101" series, and I was tickled that the Geodyssey cache gave me another excuse to come back (although it obviously took me a while). Since I've previously shared both of those puzzles before, I thought for today I'd go with this Florida cache, a:

Quirky Narrative - 1/8/19
I had to laugh when I stumbled across today's Australian puzzle. I was searching for something else entirely, and was surprised when this popped up and the theme turned out to be something I'd just spent a lot of time with lately. I was also pleasantly surprised to realize the CO is one whose work I have tested and has been shared here before. Have fun with this:

Stylish! - 1/6/18
My geocaching friends know that I have issues with motion-sickness ... I always have to sit in the front seat (I'd prefer to be the driver, honestly), and can't look down at a map or my phone for more than a minute or two before I turn green. A bus ride to New York City has a similar effect, even if I don't try to read anything, and I've been known to walk out of a movie when I can't handle the jumpy camera work. So I had to laugh the another day when an article featuring this stylish eyewear landed in my inbox (you can watch a humorous explanation and demonstration here.)
Now if they could just come up with something to help me solve this kind of puzzle without a:

How Old is Mrs. Gooby? - 1/4/19
Today's California puzzle has an interesting bit of history behind it. See if you can figure out:
How Old is Mrs. Gooby? (note, if you're having trouble interpreting the meaning of "F" I think the CO means "the digital root of Mrs. Gooby's age" minus 1.)

Resolution - 1/2/19
So, my resolution for this blog this year is to not be so far behind that I have to come find a post for the next day before I go to bed at night. I've gotten way behind in my solving and so I don't have a nice stash of them saved up. Back in the early days I could be two, or even three weeks ahead, but I spent this year really scrambling to stay caught up (which started to feel like work). So, I resolve to work ahead but also to post reruns as needed. With 8 years of posts to choose from, I've certainly got a lot of them. Remember, your submissions really help me out a lot ... perhaps you can resolve to send me some good ones? Let's travel today to Michigan for a puzzle I featured way back in January, 2012 ... and please wish me luck with my:
