Earlier this year I had the chance to visit the virtual cache "It's a Wonderful Life," and I expect many people are enjoying that movie for the umpteenth time this year.  Jimmy Stewart has always been one of my favorite actors ... I think I first saw him on TV in "No Highway in the Sky," playing a scientist convinced that an airplane's tail was going to fall off.  Today's Pennsylvania puzzle features another of his classic movies:

If you've been following this blog for very long you'll know that I happen to love holiday-themed puzzles.  As such, it shouldn't come as a surprise to hear that I was tickled to come across a puzzle located on Christmas Island entitled:

P.S.  If you don't remember exactly where Christmas Island is, click on the map on the cache page and zoom out.  It was quite a surprise to me to see that geocaching.com reports its location as being 10,219.1 miles north from my home location in New York(!)  I guess that's one way to think about it.

It's December and that means we're nearing the end of another full year of Puzzles of the Day.  I've enjoyed hearing from a few new readers lately, and am planning to continue in 2014 for as long as it remains fun, and doesn't start to feel like work.  I'm considering doing a "best of" puzzle once a week, going back to a previously featured puzzle that I really liked.  I'd also like to have a "viewer's choice" once a week, featuring a puzzle submitted by a reader.  Those submissions are really appreciated, so I'm hoping that in 2014 every regular reader would be willing to submit at least one fun puzzle they have created or enjoyed.  You can send it by commenting on any puzzle (I screen comments before they publish) or by contacting me (teamajk) through geocaching.com.

1000 Days of Geocaching Puzzle of the Day - 9/26/13

Today marks the 1000th day of the Geocaching Puzzle of the Day.  What started out as a challenge to myself to see if I could solve a good puzzle for every day of the year has turned into an almost three year long odyssey - and what a fun trip it has been.  While it's also been a lot of work, I have really enjoyed  seeking out clever, unique, and intricate puzzles written by wonderfully creative people, many of whom I have had the pleasure of chatting with via e-mail, and some of whom I've even been able to meet in person.

Since many cachers mark the 1000 cache milestone with a golden ammo can, I thought it would be fun to share a golden ammo puzzle with you.  I originally had a different puzzle in mind, but since I recently celebrated my 1000th find with a fun golden ammo can puzzle puzzle created by Ithacadoodle (one of the puzzlers who got me into this hobby in the first place), I hope you'll indulge me for sharing:

A new caching friend of mine was planning a trip to Paris recently, and asked if I had ever looked at the Tintin series of puzzles caches, some of which are located there.  I had not seen them before, but we set out to see what we could make of them.  I wasn't sure what I was in for: Tintin was a character I knew nothing about, all the puzzles had with medium to high difficulty ratings ... and many were written only in French.  What we found was a challenging, complex group of multi-layered, well-done puzzles.  This one was a good starting spot, since it included an English translation:

For the past year or so I have enjoyed subscribing to "World of Puzzles" magazine, a bi-monthly spinoff of "Games" magazine.  This month's issue (the cover says "Spring 2013") features a special bonus section of puzzles written by a fellow cacher from north of the border.  These puzzles aren't caching related, but he talks about writing geocaching puzzles, and it turns out that the May, 2011, issue of the magazine actually featured a special bonus section composed of geocaching puzzles he had written just for them. Knowing of my love of puzzles, my dad sent me an article from the March 11, 2013 "Time" magazine, entitled "The Answer Men," which I highly recommend.  It talks about the lure of puzzling and the World Puzzle Championship.   If you can get a copy of that issue, I think you will find it interesting.  My favorite line:  "A well-constructed puzzle leads you down a particular chain of reasoning to a specific elegant or counter-intuitive cognitive leap, and as you make it, you know at that moment that you're making precisely the same leap the puzzle designer did.  There's a moment of silent intellectual communion, of shared aha!"  Well said.
